Why do Alpina owners deride a nice M3 like this?

I saw an E39 5 series Touring - I'm fairly sure it was a 520 of some sort (single exhaust) but it had a wonky Alpina badge on the back (standard BMW wheels) as well as three M badges. I wept a little.

I also saw a 520d (E60) with an M5 badge on the grille.

Now I know the image of BMW is pretty poor despite them generally being good cars but this sort of things is WHY it's so bad.

Does some complete Terence think a fake badge will convince people his car is a true M one?

A mate has recently bought a very tidy 2011 E92 335d. All very nice apart from the M badge on the grille - WHY!! AND M SPORT IS NOT PROPER M!!
