Peugeot 106 & 206, Rover 25, Mini 1, Saxo, Ka, Fiesta, Ibiza, Fabia, Lupo, Golf.
For £700 your going to get a bit of a shed no matter what manufacturer you go with.
Went down the route of GTA Metro 1.3, Fiat Uno 998cc, Seat Ibiza 1.4 before the Scooby. Ibiza was ok, a little slow, and the thermostat could be a bit of an issue.

What about Japanese reliability? Have you not considered something like a Daihatsu? Toyota owned company. For the money you describe you could pick up something like a Mark 1 Sirion, YRV or even a Cuore.
The latter is a 1 litre but is quite nippy

Quick question...on the Punto's broken parts...were the gearboxes/clutches replaced with new ones or just second hand items? I only ask because if they were replaced withnew items, then maybe she needs some lessons on how to be mechanicsly sympatethic before throwing more money at her on another car to break . Yes I know its hard, I'm trying to stop my little cousin from forcibly ramming the gear selector into every gear, before she kills the gearbox on her £500 Fiesta...She just glazes over when I talk about how it will eventually wreck the syncros and baulk rings at least I got to checking/topping up the oil level now...seeing it guzzles a litre of it every 1000 miles ).
Or maybe just buy her a automatic?
But under no circumstances ever buy a CVT automatic though (which will rule out Fiestas and Rover 25s/200s).
