Tempted to buy a car ( Haven't had one in over a year now due to studies, working internships etc)

I'm going to be saving to buy something decent before the end of the summer, but i've got a nice little bonus in my pay this month.

Looking at spending a grand tops. Any ideas?

I want something thats fun though. Not a rattly ****box. Been looking at golf 1.8T's as i know they have solid engines if looked after.

Does anyone have any advice or recomendations? I'm not too fussed about the mileage as i'll do all the maintaining/necessary repairs myself. So if a car has 130k i wont be put off if it is in good condition.
