Default BMW security issue?

Remember the poor security of BMW that people were/are stealing without key and unlocking with these special devices and reprogramming and driving off within minutes.

Now the question is that is there a list of cars that are affected by this and what years? Is there a database somewhere?
Have BMW fixed this issue by an update or something.
Is it just the push button start that's effected?
Thanks in advance

Yes, early push button start Beamers.

HOWEVER, I have seen 2000 to 2005 BMWs unlocked without the keys or alarm sounding. I've still not worked out how (it wasn't a jammer- cars were locked and deadlocked). This was done just to steal contents from the car rather than the car itself.

BMW haven't done a recall.

Your car will only get the update if it goes in for an unrelated repair or service, or if you 'phone your local dealer and ask for the update.

All the update does is ( as far as we can tell) removes the possibility of the windows being lowered using the metal key part that's enclosed in the plastic block.
They will still lower by holding the 'unlock' button down, but won't lower when the key ( or a screwdriver) is put in the keyhole and turned.

Yep no recall as far as I have read but you just go to dealer and ask them to update and they will free of charge,
But zip I'm intrested in that comment about only the window function being stopped but does the key programming still apply if they gain entry to car?

No it has not been fixed, the exploit exists within the security community, do remember the dealers at large are not educated or equipped to deal with this, hence the long delays.

Cat and mouse. Update means only dedicated professionals know about existing exploits, the same level of security that is considered 'normal' within the industry.

Can i ask why you are so concerned?

As a reference, the PS3 keys are still considered more advanced than any car security software ever developed.

They have been cracked.

You are going to insure a car of such value anyway, a prerequisite for any motor vehicle on the highway these days, i do not see the problem, unless the cost of insurance is putting you off.

If they want your car, then they will simply load it into the back of a lorry and use a gps scrambler, it is not difficult.

I have used network/mobile/gps jammers, so powerful they stop communication on physical wires within 1000 meters.

Fascinating. What line of work are you in that requires you to use stuff like this?

Cheers

Some people reckon a new key can now only be programmed with an existing key in the slot, others don't think this is the case.
\BMW haven't mentioned it either way!
There's a very long thread on Pistonheads (BMW General) that goes into more detail (and arguments...)

Mine's a 2011 built and November registered but needed the update.

Check exactly when they were built - I seem to think after September are ok.

Just take the panel down and unplug the obd port and cable tie up the dash out the way. Then fit a fake obd plug. That will Atleast slow them down. I've done loads for customers.

Is there any exclusions apart from the obvious in getting paid out if it so happens?

Had BMW check my 57 plate 330d M Sport. They informed me it only affected Sept 2007 on cars.

Think it's more the keyless entry and push button start that's a hot one.

Had bmw contact me to have my x5 recalled about 4 weeks ago and had the fix done, took approx 2 hours to complete.

Not sure about all models but the x5/x6 fix has been around for a couple of months I believe.

Hi mike , do you know exactly what they did? Did they give you any info? And what year is your x5?
