mrs was in a crash tonight-need new run-around
my mrs got shunted from behind tonight (ooo-er) and i have spoken to the insurance and its gonna be a write off,car was an 03 fiesta 1.4,we are expecting around £1500 ish back from the payout and have around £750 cash to put towards another car so around £2250
what can i get
it needs to be
small
cheap to insure
cheap to tax
cheap to run as she does stop-start all day every day as she is a home help carer sometimes she does 50 miles a day just stop/starting from different address's
must be reliable as she depends on it for work
must not be french
was thinking about a diesel but never had one,are they that much better on fuel?
was thinking
fiesta
corsa
lupo
swift
any ideas?

Interesting that you discount French cars yet include Fords, Vauxhalls And VW's.
I've owned more cars than I care to remember and have found French cars (especially Citroen ) to be the most reliable I have ever owned, yet every Ford, Vauxhall or VW has been a nightmare.
Suzuki Swift is a good car though

If she does a lot of miles a diesel might be a good option, but if she doesn't do many miles I would forego the fuel economy of a diesel and stick to a petrol which will be cheaper to buy and less expensive if it does go badly wrong in the engine department.
If it was me I would look at a Honda Civic. Should be able to get a reasonable 2004 Civic for that money and they are reliability wise pretty much bombproof. Failing that a Fiesta would be my choice as they are great to drive and cheap for parts.

Mitsubishi carisma. When ever I want a run around I put £300 limit on eBay and type in 12months mot. I usually pick the ones with history and that look tidy.
The carisma we purchased was a 1 owner FSH that I intended scraping after a charity race. Kept it for years as it was soo good.

Toyota Yaris for that sort of cash, I would go for a Citroen C3, just check rear shocks, Alfa 147 but they can be a little "quirky" and you need to do your homework on those (1.6's).
You can also look at the Nissan Micra, watch out for rotten subframes though as they are common

the seats in the corsa d are terrible for long journeys. they have a auwful bar that digs into to the undersides of your legs. the vw is a good car but the spec will be low in comp.

I know. People who discount French cats without trying them are way off the mark. I've had 4 Peugeot's and they've all been brilliant. 205GTi was hit and miss but doubt the OP will be buying a 24 year old car.

yeah im gutted about the aygo mate as it looks a proper fun little car but ive been reading on a forum about these leaks-it even affects new ones-very poor quality and the worst thing is they cannot fix it

I know someone who has a Swift, about 6 years old (the car not the person ), but I have no idea how shw has found it, will call her up and ask her tomorrow. It looks a good car from what I have seen of it!

Trouble is VWs aren't all they are cracked up to be as said by djr and parts prices are high if you go OEM.
