BMW E61 535D M Sport LCI with Sport Auto...
...bit of a mouthful isn't it
So continuing from my thread regarding the search for a fast estate car I've compromised on one of these. Audi RS/S variants just a little bit too scary as far as repair costs etc. go and I've decided that running two cars (one economical, one not) is a bit unecessary.
Just got to track a good one down now, would prefer one that had the mid 2007 facelift (LCI) and ideally the optional sport auto gearbox that has the shift levers on the steering wheel. Seem quite rare though...
Anywhere else I should be looking? Registered on Autotrader, Pistonheads, BMW Approved Used, and check eBay from time to time.
Interested in feed back from any owners too

I think the problem with the 535D is it sits right between being a performance car and an economical car. Ultimately frustrating the owner. If you are after performance the costs of running it have you thinking you should have gone the whole hog and got the M5. On the economy side the MPG figures do not look great to say it is a diesel. Then there is the potential high costs if something goes wrong.
A tricky decision.

If you're worried about running costs then a high performance diesel is probably just as scary as the RS cars? They are tuned close to death remember so will regularly "trip up" all imho of course.

At the end of the day I'm looking a fairly big cars and they're never going to be at the pinnacle of performance, what I really want is something that's effortless to waft around in, can take two kids + plus all the crap they need, can fit a roofbox / bike racks, and can still overtake old duffers on their Sunday afternoon drives if I command it
That and the fact that it's just about ecomical enough to do my 200 miles a week of commuting so I don't need to run a second car really sells it for me.
Mind you have yet to test drive one so that's next

So test drove an '06 535D last weekend and I really like it, the face lifted version has got to be even better
Problem is they're rare cars and I've yet to find right one. Closest match is at a BMW main dealers but it seems way over priced, I'd say it was worth £20k tops but they have it for sale at £24k. How much can you squeeze them for? I could see them coming down a bit but £4k off the asking price To try and negotiate that deal you'd have to go in even lower e.g. £19k at which point I fear they would think I'm taking the **** and tell me to go away

24k for an 06 535d
When I bought my 330d Coupe in 2010 I got it for £16k and 335's were about £18k on 06 plates. 5 series were only a few grand more back then....

Book price is around £20k but this does have below average mileage an most of the essential extras, still doesn't make it worth £4k more though
The one I test drove last weekend, more for research than a serious intent to buy was £16k.
Shame that I don't live anywhere near that dealership otherwise I'd be happy to go and hassle them
