Peugoet 306's
Thinking about buying one to throw round a track, the 2 models im looking at are the gti6 and rallye.
Anyone had any of these and what is the best model???

phase 1 gti6 was a hoot. I had one (well, Wifey did!)
Phase 2 got heavier, as did the Phase 3. But both were more refined and up-to-date.
The Rallye felt closer to the the lighter Phase 1, but with a more "current" look.
Mine finally blew up at 165,000 miles. Sold it for £300.
Great car, but it IS French. Cheap to work on, but frequent
The gearbox is great, until you want to do a 3-point turn
Good car, that always felt planted and had go-kart handling. Great fun for the money.

i have a awesome 306 rallye rally car, was very strong car, and with a bit of head work and re locate the air box it made a lovely induction sound and pulled very well!
decent ones are getting hard to find, but if its going to be a track car then id suggest the rallye over the gti-6 as its the stripped out version, no leccy windows, air con etc

The base models are mechanically identical (engine, gearbox, suspension, etc), howener the GTi-6 has stuff like electric windows, A/C, 1/2 leather, sunroof etc making it heavier.
If you are looking for one to strip out then if you can find a rallye then do otherwise you will always be a few kg heavier due to the A/C and sunroof.

There have been big debates/discussions on several of the 306 forums about the virtues of each model. and in essence, what has been said above is correct.
But the Phase 1 GTI6 (iirc) was pretty much as light as the later Rallye (either Phase 2 or 3), so the weight issue pretty much balanced out (pardon the pun!) due to the later cars getting heavier through evolution anyway.
Of course, you can then strip the Phase 1 down even further to remove the "weighty: items, and if you've got a good leather interior, they still fetch very good money on auction sites.
The key thing being that if your main issue is that of cost, a Phase 1 GTi6 will be considerably cheaper than the more (on the surface, anyway) desirable Rallye model.
It then depends how much track prep you want to do to it, and the value of selling the stripped parts.
But in essence, whilst we all may not necessarily agree on the exact model to start with (depending on your specific requirements), you will not get many people disagreeing with how good the cars are (in either form), and the bargain they are for track use.
Enjoy

It would be a great starting point for a track car,its already got a hybrid rear arb, adjustable rose jointed front arb drop links, solid beam mounts, lowered, airbags removed,TD pro race 1.2's...
I've also got a pair of Eibach front springs,a set of goodridge hoses & a skip brown quick shift that I haven't got around to fitting....

I saw a red 306 Rallye in a park near me a couple of weeks ago. It was standards with perfect paint and body. It was stunning, a very well looked after car that looked like a collectors piece.
I have always liked the 306s since my work car was a 1.8 306 XS. The handling was excellent and Ive always want to try a GTI6 or Rallye.

I keep thinking about a hot hatch after I saw a 106 gti for £800, then I figured as much as I like them if I was spending that then I may as well spend 1500 and get a 172, then I figured for 1500 I could get choose from some nice scoobies and sort the handling out, then I figured that I have a Porsche 968 and and Impreza that never get driven and perhaps I should fix the scooby and sell it and MOT the 968 again so I can actually use it.
