Question VW Golf R any good?

I'm thinking of buying a new golf R 5door. I don't do many miles but will be a family and weekend car.

Are they any good?

Already a few threads on this. But to repeat, from a R32 owner's point of view:

Overpriced 4 banger turbo IMO. Yeah its faster, and is a very capeable car, but its just not a R32 replacement (which VW claimed it to be).

Main issue is I'm lost on the point of this car over the Audi S3 (bar the badge)...which is the same chassis, same drivetrain, similar spec etc. Plus some good deals on S3s at the moment as its due for a facelift very soon.

VW's top of the range Golf should have a special engine to set it apart from everything else, otherwise its just a AWD GTi with a few extra horses and standard options and stiffer/lower suspension (unless specced with the active suspension...ACC).

Cheers Ali

I looked at the s3 but I need 5 doors and don't like the look of the sport back. Do you know if there are any deals to be done on the golf r, I've heard that productions ends next month?

Cheers

Always worth trying to do a haggle! At a guess I think the R's prices will only drop after the MK7 shape Golf appears (September according to CAR magazine).

The R32's new price only really dropped in a big way when the MK6 GTI hit the showrooms where the dealership were trying hard to get rid of the last few left that hadn't sold. I recall the dealers by me had a new one in for £24K OTR!

I suspect the R will be similar as I don't think its been a strong seller either (I've only seen two being used on the road).

I like the Golf R. As a new purchase, it's way over priced, and I would take an S3 over the Golf if buying new. Although the current A3 shape is discontinued this year.

As weekend car for you and your family, I doubt there are many better cars in terms of build quality, AWD traction, power, and refinement. It won't lose a great deal of money.

Good car. I'd take one over a Focus ST/RS, or a Subaru STI.

Very nice car but i would have a good look round and haggle with some dealers as they are'nt selling as VW had hoped. I went to look at one a couple of weeks back and asked the salesman whats the best price he would do and he knocked 3k off without an argument. Would benifit from a remap in my opinion though.

I've only seen one on the road. Look ok but I like my R32 more.
