Porsche Boxter 3..2 S

Thats an early one with 240bhp i think..
IMHO i think they are a great car...They are light so performance is quick, but the major bonus is the handling... It is sublime!
In the right hands they are devastatingly quick on the A+B roads..
Try one,and see what you think..

All the early boxster engines can get IMS bearing failure...They can lunch the engine if the bearing collapses..
But if its not happened already chances are you will be fine...
987 boxsters dont suffer at all..

This was what put an end to my Porsche owning dream unfortunately. I was on the verge of buying one 5 years ago but read about the Russian Roulette you play with these engines. There was no way I was taking these chances and the new Boxsters were only brand new and I couldnt afford one.

An Impreza.
However I was just about to buy a S2000 as my alternative to the Boxster - days away from doing a deal but then found out that my wife was pregnant, hence what I ended up with.

To the OP, if you buy that car and the RMS does go, then be prepared to break it as it wouldnt be cost effective putting it back on the road. I was going to spend £13000 on one and decided it was far to high a percentage fixing it if it went pop to make it worth it.

The RMS job isnt that costly..... Many Porsche specialists are fitting a new clutch and RMS for under £800 inc VAT....
Hardly bank busting or car breaking territory.
The engine failures are much documented....But less than 3% of the total output of engines across the 986/996 range was affected. If you also factor in that many cars are now 10yrs old + then if the IMS were to let go,then if it hasnt already it will probably be fine.Reading forums and the internet in general will scare you to death, you only hear the bad parts, never the millions of units that are running perfectly with 150k+ on them.
In my 28 years as a tech i have repaired more scoob engines that have popped than Porsche..
Edit to add........
I have had a 2000 3.2s Boxster and i now have a 2001 911... Both have been exemplary and never missed a beat.
That was the kiss of death............lol.......

Sorry it was a ridicuous thing to say, I meant IMS and not RMS. 5 years ago and with the cars I was looking at this was a deal breaking concern for me especially when the Honda was built properly and had non of these concerns. I would still be put off spending £5k on a car that should "probably be fine", it would spoil the driving experience for me half waiting for the thing to go pop at any given moment.
Buy a S2000 instead and get on enjoying it.

Yep.
Mines a Gen 2 987 Spyder - complete with the (as yet) reliable DFi engine.
To put it all in perspective, there are literally tens of thousands of Boxsters of all ages out there and only a fraction will have/ had engine issues.
But, you pays your money and take your chance!

Nice car...not at all gay (meant with seriousness not jest)
With taking the risk, if there was no other alternative then I would consider its a risk worth taking but as there are alternatives then why take it?

hartech, autofarm, 911Virgin (to name but a few) - get a car from these people (or at least with history associated with these people), and you'll be fine.
going through the search for a 996 C4 right now. Homework is the key to success here imho.

The IMS is all a big "if"....
The S2000 has problems with timing chain tensioners and clutches.... Granted non of them would give you a bill like a IMS bearing failing though..I like S2000's but they are pedestrian until you rev the taytors off them, great for a track but on the road they are lacking...
If you buy a Porsche and are in it for the long term, then get a modded IMS bearing fitted and have done..It can be done with the engine still in the car.
If you drove a 3.2S and an S2000 back to back there is really no comparison..

Not heard of this. So is this the solution that offers piece of mind when owning a Boxster? How much fitted would it be?

Found a kit for around $700 so roughly £500 or so, however it takes 10 hours to fit! It was looking good but I wouldnt be prepared to spend that much on it, if it was me I would just avoid the car.
