Just to add, I dont have my solid, reliable Jap motor anymore, I have in fact taken a step back and bought German crap instead.

He he....
Dont get me wrong,i love jap sport stuff.....I have owned Skylines,Supra,3xAE86 RWD twin cams,Evo's and a rather nice 300ZX TT back in the day..
Great cars, although the 300ZX did try and bankrupt me when the water pump went and smashed the engine to bits!!Jap cars are great, but soulless and always reek of cheap plastic...You can smell a skyline 10ft before you get in it...lol...
Back the the Boxy...... Yep.....£1000 on a £5000 is too much money..But you just wouldnt do it.You would run and drive the car and be happy. Its a 12 yr old sports car with high miles......Reliability cannot be relied upon....That doesnt matter what car company from anywhere on the globe you buy from.
Same applies to M3,M5 or any of Audi Rs range...At 12yrs+ the engine can turn into a ball of **** at any given time..
If your cheap boxy went bang.....Break it or sell it ! Boxies with no engines are currently fetching £3000 so if the worse did happen, then its not a massive loss...

I think thats a fair comment, even if the IMS does go then you are not looking at the vast expense involved with putting it right as £3000 is only a £2000 hit. You could possible get more if you broke it and sold parts privately.
On the Japanese front, there is something about the Impreza that had so much more character than my Mercedes. I have to say despite all the refinement I preferred the Subaru but needs must and with a family of 4 it meant I had to become more sensible.

The character of the Scoob (imho) comes from the engine note. Certainly not from the refinement of the cabin (aside from the seats).
The cabin is pretty awful compared to most German stuff. But the German stuff can be a bit soulless in the driving - eg my Audi S4: great in a straight line. But BORING as hell. Used to think of it as a fast armchair
I'm still on the hunt for a 996. (again RMS/IMS is an issue - unless you look specifically for cars that have had the issue remedied). My bigger concern is that it can take up to 12 months (one person took 18 months!) to find the right car

However fatscoobs description description of how they are to drive is pretty spot on. Great fun when you're really on it, got to keep the revs over 6k, and use the 9k redline. But at all other times the lack of low down torque is disappointing.
I am now actively looking to sell / exchange the S2000 and get the 3.2 S.

Weird isnt it..
As im thinking of selling the 911 cab and going back into a Z3M coupe.....lol....
I cant think of any other car that i want that i havent had before......(have owned an M coupe and shouldnt have sold it ) NEver owned an E46 M3....But it would have to be a super nice low mileage manual....
I think my time has gone for Japanese sports cars.... I was really tempted into a 350z a few years back, but the Renault engine doesnt inspire any confidence at all..

I would really like a 350Z, lol. Maybe its an age thing Im not sure but I have a lot of time for companies that build cars that don't break and apart from the consumption I would be more than happy putting up with a slightly hard right and plasticky interior when it drives and looks that good.

Yes the interiors are very bland and plasticy but I've seen interiors on 10 year old BMW's which are revolting, all plastic fake wood.

Both Skylines i have had have been great cars....
But you could be in a Primera,Civic or Corrolla.... They are made of the same stuff and the only difference with the skyline is they are fast....

I have a 944 cab because I cant afford a 911 !
Sometimes, because you can afford bigger and better it doesnt always follow that what you buy is better in every single aspect, some people as Zip said prefer Boxsters, it isnt just a cheaper 911, it is different in a lot of ways, it is mid engined and gets, generally a better rating for handling balance than 911's, am sure when I get my 996 turbo that there will be things about my 944 I miss.

I popped into Porsche Leeds today. In the showroom they had a brand new Boxster S in black which looked stunning. It was next to a 2008 911 cabriolet also in black. Both had the tops down and the Boxster quite simply outshone the 911, with its hints of Carrera GTness about it.
I then looked at the price. 911 - £48,000. Boxster - £38,000
Milage 911 - 40,000. Boxster - 0
There was only around 60bhp difference between them which makes the Boxster the intelligent mans Porsche quite frankly.

The 911 is a twin turbo?
