Question Golf R32

What do you have to look out for with these cars? I am thinking about getting one. Budget would be 8k or so?

I'm a bit of a VAG virgin.

Thanks mate. I'm thinking that a full VW service history is the way to go as you imply these aren't owned by Granddads and they get crashed and people don't service them etc. I might have to up my budget a grand or two.

I think manual is the way to go as DSG is a bit of an unknown to me and more to fail, but depends what is out there.

A3 3.2 quattro might be a less abused and cheaper option, although not as overtly sporty?

Found one I like. Took it for a spin, pretty impressive. Obviously not going to blow you socks off but quite entertaining and like the V6.

I wonder if the insurance on the A3 equivalent is lower and whether things like the suspension are softer? Certainly they look a lot more subtle which would be a plus in terms of unwanted attention and theif magnetism?

Depends what you mean by slow. To be honest I'm not enjoying fighter jet power delivery so much now. I think I'm getting older and not as confident in my ability (or luck), don't need the adrenaline rush at all? The R32 felt quite planted and entertaining, it's not overpowered so little chance of me crashing into anyone else and killing them. It's a kind of luxo-sports-hatch with a proper engine. A mate of mine who used to design cars said he reckons 250 hp as all you need for the road.

Its not horsepower you need for the road its torque!

R32's are nice cars. I looked a t a few before buying an S3! I think the Golf handled and sounded better but the fuel economy and fact it was harder to tune put me off in the end. I wouldn't buy any car like that privately!

Are you pslewis in disguise?

I agree about the tuneability, you would need to do quite a bit to get lots more power out of them, but you could. A blown 3.2 V6 won't be slow.

Personally mine will stay stock so I can resell no problems with all the proper SH etc. Speaking of Pete he has a point about modding cars...it's a money pit.

Most of you lot are talking absolute drivel.

You don't buy an R32 and expect to be in the fastest car on the road.
Nor do you buy one to try and extract more power through modding.
Anyone who considers an Astra VXR to be an alternative is clearly

To the O.P:

Had my wife's one for 2.5/3 years now. Five door with DSG. Does 27mpg with mainly non-motorway driving. Tax is top band.
It's fast enough, has all the toys and is nicely built.
It will pull out of a damp T junction without leaving you floundering in a sea of traction control or wheelspin.
And the engine....It's a 3.2 in a Golf! Buy one with a standard exhaust and enjoy (courtesy of the active bypass valve) one of the best exhaust notes this side of a Ferrari.
I can't think of anything to replace it with, hence it's still on the drive.

Hope this helps

Does the DGS give better mpg than the manual? I suppose it depends how one drives etc?

The DSG is very keen to get into sixth when you use normal drive mode which probably goes some way toward improving figures.
Of course, as with any car, it depends on how you drive and if fuel consumption is of major concern to you then the R32 probably isn't for you.

[QUOTE=madisonmonkey;10620016]I'm not sure how a car can be crap and yet nice to drive?

Fuel monster and numb = the crap bit

Interior and a 'nice' car to drive = the good bit

As for 5mpg and the car being fooooked whoever wrote it......buy one drive it hard and see what mpg you get out of it .........not once have I commented on a car that I havnt owned
Instead of a bitchfest read what I put.........

They are a nice car to be in and drive........but they are pretty slow and mpg is ****e when giving it the beans

Bored now so bye

It's sounds more like an instantaneous reading when the throttle is floored rather than a journey average, I've owned one and it averaged mid twenties.......

How can an inlet manifold blow up unless you get a backfire in the inlet?

Any reason for that? Thrashing the life out of it or not doing the proper maintenance schedule?
