Golf R32

What do you have to look out for with these cars? I am thinking about getting one. Budget would be 8k or so?

I'm a bit of a VAG virgin.

howellsy42 10 May 2012 09:19 PM

I helped a friend buy one three weeks ago. really look at any you go to look at !
we looked at quite a few dogs one had be wrapped to hide a bad respray one had false service history one was a cat c when was meant to be a cat d most had had some kind of paint he bought a 55 reg dsg with 42k and full vw service history in the end for £9200

tony de wonderful 10 May 2012 09:28 PM

Thanks mate. I'm thinking that a full VW service history is the way to go as you imply these aren't owned by Granddads and they get crashed and people don't service them etc. I might have to up my budget a grand or two.

I think manual is the way to go as DSG is a bit of an unknown to me and more to fail, but depends what is out there.

john banks 11 May 2012 03:58 PM

A3 3.2 quattro might be a less abused and cheaper option, although not as overtly sporty?

tony de wonderful 11 May 2012 04:32 PM

Found one I like. Took it for a spin, pretty impressive. Obviously not going to blow you socks off but quite entertaining and like the V6.

mamoon2 11 May 2012 04:42 PM

06 onwards pay the £475 road tax while <06 pay £270 a year

howellsy42 11 May 2012 04:50 PM

I tested a manual and a dsg I thought I wouldn't like the dsc but its ok and the paddles are ok to use test both and see what you think

most we looked at seemed to of had hard life's in the end my mate got his from a trader as most of the private ones just weren't right

tony de wonderful 11 May 2012 04:55 PM

I think people thrash them a lot. A bit like Scoobs really.

john banks 11 May 2012 05:01 PM

I wonder if the insurance on the A3 equivalent is lower and whether things like the suspension are softer? Certainly they look a lot more subtle which would be a plus in terms of unwanted attention and theif magnetism?

tony de wonderful 11 May 2012 05:11 PM

A mate of mine had an S3, he said the suspension was dreadful.

LSherratt 11 May 2012 06:34 PM

Astra VXR :D

donny andi 11 May 2012 08:54 PM

Absolute piles of ****e....
Had a 53 plate......crap
Had a 06 plate last year....nice car to be in, slow as fooook, and 5mpg

I'll repeat that bit..........5mpg and slow as fooook :thumb:

Depends what you mean by slow. To be honest I'm not enjoying fighter jet power delivery so much now. I think I'm getting older and not as confident in my ability (or luck), don't need the adrenaline rush at all? The R32 felt quite planted and entertaining, it's not overpowered so little chance of me crashing into anyone else and killing them. It's a kind of luxo-sports-hatch with a proper engine. A mate of mine who used to design cars said he reckons 250 hp as all you need for the road.

Brun 11 May 2012 09:48 PM

250bhp???? Fook that :thumb:

icbm 11 May 2012 10:18 PM

Its not horsepower you need for the road its torque!

R32's are nice cars. I looked a t a few before buying an S3! I think the Golf handled and sounded better but the fuel economy and fact it was harder to tune put me off in the end. I wouldn't buy any car like that privately!

Are you pslewis in disguise? ;)

I agree about the tuneability, you would need to do quite a bit to get lots more power out of them, but you could. A blown 3.2 V6 won't be slow.

Personally mine will stay stock so I can resell no problems with all the proper SH etc. Speaking of Pete he has a point about modding cars...it's a money pit.

madisonmonkey 12 May 2012 07:12 AM

Most of you lot are talking absolute drivel.

You don't buy an R32 and expect to be in the fastest car on the road.
Nor do you buy one to try and extract more power through modding.
Anyone who considers an Astra VXR to be an alternative is clearly :cuckoo:

To the O.P:

Had my wife's one for 2.5/3 years now. Five door with DSG. Does 27mpg with mainly non-motorway driving. Tax is top band.
It's fast enough, has all the toys and is nicely built.
It will pull out of a damp T junction without leaving you floundering in a sea of traction control or wheelspin.
And the engine....It's a 3.2 in a Golf! Buy one with a standard exhaust and enjoy (courtesy of the active bypass valve) one of the best exhaust notes this side of a Ferrari.
I can't think of anything to replace it with, hence it's still on the drive.

Hope this helps :thumb:

Talking drivel
My missis used to get half decent mpg's......not 27 though
I used to get 5......I expect 5 on a track day not down a few lanes
I'll still say they are crap.....but a nice car to drive :thumb:

tony de wonderful 12 May 2012 11:53 AM

Does the DGS give better mpg than the manual? I suppose it depends how one drives etc?

nik52wrx 12 May 2012 02:23 PM

5mpg, sounds fooked to me.
Nik.

I'm not sure how a car can be crap and yet nice to drive?

The DSG is very keen to get into sixth when you use normal drive mode which probably goes some way toward improving figures.
Of course, as with any car, it depends on how you drive and if fuel consumption is of major concern to you then the R32 probably isn't for you.

donny andi 12 May 2012 03:33 PM

[QUOTE=madisonmonkey;10620016]I'm not sure how a car can be crap and yet nice to drive?

Fuel monster and numb = the crap bit

Interior and a 'nice' car to drive = the good bit :thumb:

As for 5mpg and the car being fooooked whoever wrote it......buy one drive it hard and see what mpg you get out of it .........not once have I commented on a car that I havnt owned
Instead of a bitchfest read what I put.........

They are a nice car to be in and drive........but they are pretty slow and mpg is ****e when giving it the beans :thumb:

Bored now so bye

tony de wonderful 12 May 2012 05:17 PM

It's probably a better mpg than many Imprezas.

Brun 12 May 2012 05:41 PM

Donny - 5???? Even driven hard that seems hard to believe. Is that a trip computer figure of calculated at the pump?

fatscoobfella1 12 May 2012 10:07 PM

I cant believe that we have got 24 posts in and nobody has mentioned stretched timing chains and how they can blow there plastic inlet manifold to bits!

nik52wrx 12 May 2012 10:42 PM

It's sounds more like an instantaneous reading when the throttle is floored rather than a journey average, I've owned one and it averaged mid twenties.......
Nik.

How can an inlet manifold blow up unless you get a backfire in the inlet?

fatscoobfella1 14 May 2012 06:26 PM

^^^^^^^^^

Exactly.....

One that we had in recently...

Any reason for that? Thrashing the life out of it or not doing the proper maintenance schedule?

fatscoobfella1 14 May 2012 07:56 PM

Not sure...

Car was new to us and came in because it was running badly... Only done 32k and just out of warranty..
