Default Adjusting Tappets on 1.2 Clio

Hi,

I know it's a clio but thought I'd ask on here!

The car in question is a 2000 'x' plate MkII 1.2 8v clio. y Father-in-law decided to take the rocker cover off and have a play to try and fix a problem that in the end had nothing to do with the tappets/rockers!

Anyway, he decided that some of the tappets were too loose and decided to tighten them! The car will not run on idle, it'll only run when the acceleration pedal is pressed!

I've been given the task of repairing it as I know a little more about cars, however, I'm not 100% sure on it.

Has anybody got a guide or any pics of a 1.2 8v with the rocker cover off? I know the tolerences but do I have to do them in order and do I have to crank the engine by hand to find TDC or can I just use the feeler gauges at anytime in the cycle of the cam?

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Nick.

As long as the cam lobe is fully down or off cam you can adjust that particular rocker mate.
Easiest way is to put the car in gear and rock it backwards or forwards to make the engine turn over and you can slowly rotate the engine to the point you want to adjust each rocker/tappet.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So it doesn't need to be on the intake stroke? As long as the cam is totally on or totally off then I can adjust then?

How do I know when the piston is at the very top?

Thanks,

Nick.

As long as the cam is completely off then you can adjust that one, easiest way to know if the piston is at tdc or at the top of a particular cylinder is to take out a spark plug and pop a screwdriver down through the hole and rotate engine until the screwdriver stops going up and starts to drop back down then just rock the engine[in gear or on the crank pulley] until the get the tipping point and thats the top position.

Brilliant, thanks.

I haven't looked at the car yet but I'm presuming it's the type of adjustment whereby I undo the nut and then use a screwdriver to adjust the clearances and then tighten the nut back up.

Would over tightening the tappets cause it to stop running at idle?

Thanks for the help!

Yes for sure it wouldn't idle right as the valve isn't closing properly, your correct on how to adjust.
Just be sure to check the clearence once you have tightened the nut back up and taken the screwdriver off the top of the rocker

Cripes, I've not done tappets for years and I'm a mechanic!

I used to jack the offside of the car, pop it in gear and then turn the offside wheel to turn the engine. I'm sure there's a little trick where if you watch the rockers there's a point where for say cylinder 1 the inlet valve closes and the exhaust opens... the point where they're both closed is TDC on the power stroke for the cylinder and iirc you can set cylinders 1 and 4 at the same time and do the same for cylinders 2 and 3, I think!

As above though, as long as that particular valve is off cam you can adjust it.

You might find that the old fella has removed any clearance and the valves are staying slightly open, hence the poor running.

Thanks guys!

How will I know if the valve I'm adjusting is 'rocking'?

I had the procedure somewhere for it ( it take it is the E7J engine?) i'll try and find it and post it up but it was something like have xyz exhaust valve open and adjust xyz valve clearances.

What happend to the old rule of 9, on 8v engines, valve 1 fully open adjust 8, 2 fully open adjust 7 & so on, or was that on engines in the 50's 60's & 70's.

Willi see the rockers mover or are the movements too little to see with the eye?

If I get the piston to TDC on the compression stroke could I adjust both the inlet and exhaust rockers at the same time?

Going to be doing it later today so want everything clear in my head before I start!

Thanks

Ok, on the job now!

Few problems as I sit in the Clio typing this!

I don't have a spark plug socket, do I really need one?

I'm finding it hard to turn te engine over. I've tried jacking the car up on te drivers side and turning the wheel whilst in 1st and 5th gear but it's very hard. I've also tried rocking the car forwards and backwards which is also very hard to get it to move! I am by myself at the minute, not too sure if just more muscle is required!?

Lastly, I can see where I need to adjust but whereabouts exactly do I insert the feeler gauges? Is inbetween the cam and the rocker or on the valve side?

Thanks!
