Golf R32 Same Road Tax as 5.0 Range Rover!
I've never actually looked at the different tax bands, but I've just been offered an R32 by someone I know and went to check the tax. £460 is a lot of cash just for the privilege of driving a hatchback around. But to my disgust, when I looked at the tax on the largest engined Range Rover, it came up with the same price (after first year rate)!
This is mental. Seems very unfair to be taxed the same as a car with much higher CO2 emissions.
Meanwhile, in China, you can't see a couple of feet in front of you in most cities because of the smog. And here in Britain we're being 'discouraged' from driving Golfs in order to save the f*cking polar bears?!
Rant over.

It doesn't make sense that a diesel powered mile muncher with one of these eco engine things will be £100 to tax whereas an Impreza used locally and to meets is £460.
It doesn't make sense that a 55 plate hawkeye is £245 and an 06 is £460.
The system is a joke. However, I'm not entirely sure how they will fix it without car trackers. I would think the system will be changed because cars will just be built to get round the emissions issue meaing VED as a whole will go down requiring a rethink from the government.
My 4.0L Jeep 15MPG at best was £216

Get a pre 2006 MKV model; my R32 is £260 a year (band K )
Cheaper than a RR Diesel on fuel too (95ron is cheaper than diesel, and its better on MPG)
Insurance is not too brilliant though - I was quoted the same as my old Honda NSX!
Even so £460 is only £1.29 a day, I know people who spend more on Sky TV!

And whilst we're talking about "carbon emissions tax" my Jag V12 is whopping £215 to tax and £200 to insure ......
....But does 15mpg and has to run on 97+RON fuel otherwise it dets its head off and something breaks on it everytime I drive it.

It might be even more to tax your R32's etc after tomorrow
It must be knocking the second hand values of these cars, how much is going to cost to tax a 56 plate Hawkeye in 2016? A fair proportion of its value maybe

This one is a 58 plate with around 20k on the clock. Would be the perfect car for me at the mo. Just have to decide whether or not I want to spend that much on a car. At the moment I'm leaning towards no (sensible head on) .

Good call on keeping on your sensible head; Check out the insurance on it before committing as that might be a bigger blow than the road tax. For me its £685 (30 something, clean licence since 1996, 5+yrs no claims, garaged, limited mileage etc).
Anyhoo, also worth checking options lists on these. Some are suprisingly light on spec for a "top of the range Golf" (i.e no steering remote control, no cruise control, no front fogs, standard seats, shyte radio etc). The Recaro seats are a nice but very rare optional (£1K) extra.

Bear in mind that the real cost to tax a vehicle isn't the cost of the disc, it's the cost of the disc plus about 2/3 of the cost of the fuel it uses. A Golf and a Range Rover certainly don't cost the same on that basis.

2004 350Z 3.5ltr V6 £260 road tax (mine)
2005 350Z 3.5ltr V6 £400 road tax
Go figure lol Was a nice surprise when I changed from my Classic Impreza to the 350Z to see that the Tax didn't change

Thanks, I keep thinking of selling it or P/X for something else but really not sure what for, it's a great car, looks and goes great, comfortable and better on juice than people think by quite a lot considering the type of car it is.

Conversely doesn't make sense that a 300g/km car costs ten times as much to tax as a 100g/km car
The tax should be £x / (g/km). Then it would be proportional across the range and the iQ would pay a fair amount compared to the impreza.
But then g/km is directly proportional to fuel used and so the easiest thing would be to scrap the VED and load it all onto fuel. Thus levelling the playing field for high mileage and gas guzzlers and reducing avoidance at a single stroke

Co2 wouldn't be so much of an issue if modern cars weren't so heavy.
The Golf is 1.5 tonnes
Even a Toyota IQ is close to 900kg.....compare that to a Saxo VTR - an arguably much more practical car as opposed to a motorised roller skate!

Right until you have an accident. Saxo has the structural rigidity of wet cardboard and fewer airbags. I'll go with the IQ every time...

Its annoying as it’s your average joe who gets hit by the tax as people driving range rovers, Ferraris etc don’t care about £400 on tax – probably about the same as 2 tanks of fuel. Once you get above £400 there is very little diff between taxing a WRX STi or a a Bugatti Veyron which is where it really takes the ****.
Banish RFL and just add it to fuel prices which means the more miles you do the more you get hit.
This is where BMW are impressive (either that or they bend the figures) as 335i 3.0L TT is same band as my FN2 CTR 2.0L NA.

True. I think its stands out though because you have to pay it in one lump. Imagine over the year putting all your fuel on a tab and then being presented with it at the end of the year.

As Alec Issigonis used to say....I make my cars with such good brakes, such good steering, that if people get into a crash it´s their own fault!
You can make the safest car in the world but there will always someone stupid enough to get killed in it (that includes avoiding the stupid who cause the accidents )
