4x4....which one??
my wife has decided she wants a 4x4.She has approx £6000 to spend.
It must have boot space big enough for a large dog.
Diesel preferably.
She likes the look of the Nissan x trail but we have read stories about problems with turbos and intercoolers.
So which ones fit the bill ?

Our X trail was brilliant.Proper size wipeclean boot unlike a freelander which gives you enough space for an umbrella
Only had to replace an interior light bulb in 100k
Got a BMW now and wife moans every day about how she misses the X Trail

My old man's on his second X-Trail.
Good cars. However ...................
Don't expect Audi/BMW interior standards, because the X-Trail is very basic. Cheap materials, and lots of plastic.
Don't expect X5 levels of road handling, as it's very old school in it can wallow a bit.
Saying all that, they are good cars. Fantastic in the snow, and can go places an X5 wouldn't dare go.
Good cars. Bit old school.

Forester. Surely
Failing that, have a look at the Suzuki (Grand) Vitara - new shape model which I think you can pick up for around £6k these days is pretty good. Not the quickest but decent economy, good boot, interior's not bad and they handle OK too.

But we are talking softroaders here not off roaders, i have a isuzu swb trooper and it can't be beaten for off and on road performance, and i drove them all, it was a 4x4 dealer that forced me to take it for a drive as i was not interested and wanted a land cruiser, but 6 years on it's hands down the best car i have ever had and still going strong, 110mph on the motorway, and i have a 5mile dirt road on which i treat it like i'm on the paris dakar every day, even rolled it off roading and it won't give in, 1 exhaust couple sets of pads and oil and filters and a clutch.
It's like the toyota pick up off top gear, it just wont die no matter what i do to it.lol

I love Land Rovers.Think the new disco looks great(except ridiculous lights).Proper Range Rover be my dream car
Sport and Evoque are an embarrasment to the marque
Apart from that,I just wouldn't buy a Land Rover as I worry about their reliability
Buy something Japanese

Honda CR-V
MrsD has had hers for the past 4 years, she loves it. For everyday use it's a typical Honda, well built, comfortable enough, and impossible to break. But a little dull to drive.
Get it on a muddy field, or some snow though, and the thing is an absolute animal
There's a bit of understeer to start with, but as soon as the rear diff engages, it's properly sideways all the way
Ours is a facelift Mk1 2.0L petrol with automatic gearbox. Plenty of power, but it needs revving to get the best out of it.
