I assume you are looking at B7 A4 2005 to 2008.

Theres the 140 or 170 models. The 170 has a diesel particulate filter which can cost alot to replace. If you do short journies it can be a problem. You can have it removed and mapped out the ECU but its a cost. EGR valve gets blocked but doesnt seem too hard to remove, clean and refit.

There are injector issues on both engines but Audi will look at it and replace FOC if required - apparently.

The 170 is like a previous gen engine with current gen gubbins which sort of dont work. I dont think either engine is common rail which can be an issue but I dont know much about that.

My mother has a 140 auto which does mid 40s mpg. Her previous b6 a4 did early 50s no problem. The new engines dont seem that great mpg. The 140 is better on fuel than the 170. If not running properly the 170 can return poor mpg. Having slated the 170 i have one ordered through a dealer mate. 2nd hand of course. Seeing him tomorrow so may change to a 140. Seems the less problematic.

The 170 has twin exhausts, the 140 single. You can fit 170 exhaust and valance easy enough. Or the TFSi exhaust which looks better. Think I will do this if I get a 140.

Sat Nav and bluetooth is cool and works fine. The Sat Nav wont do UK postcodes which can be a pain. Sometimes the nav DVD wont come out so thats a dealer visit to allow it to come out if you want to play DVDs. Its so the Nav DVD isnt pinched during delivery.

S Line seats are comfy enough. Heating can be a tricky beast to set properly. Thats about it I guess.

I had a 2008 Sline and my main gripe was the boot wasn't that big hence it only lasted a year before i traded it in, other than that it was a decent car with no problems during my 10k miles of owning it.

It's virtually unheard of for the 140 to have injector issues, the injectors in the 140 engine are made by Bosch where as the 170 engine injectors are made by Siemens and it is those that have been having major issues.

That said I have a Leon with the 140 engine and it needed a new turbo at 40k as the turbo blades were worn, the independent turbo specialist said that it's a common problem and I got a rebuilt turbo with better internals on an exchange basis.

I wonder if the 170 turbo fits the 140.

Think I am definately going for a 140 now.

The 140 can easily be mapped to gain 170 and over anyway but for me with the Leon I've found the 140 to be enough day to day.

Only thing I would say about the 140 engine is listen out for a whooshing noise on lift off from the accelerator that's what I had, at first I thought it was a split turbo hose but it turned out the turbo blades had worn down.
Repair cost was £1300 all in luckily I had a warranty.

Well my definately getting a 140 is out the window as the 170 is on its way for better or worse.

Look forward to future posts of my DPF and injector woes

170 bhp engine commonly suffers from oil pump failure.

Do a search on here, this question crops up on a monthly basis. big issues seem to be the DPF & injectors - which fail and cost £500.00 a pop! avoid the multitronic (or whatever stupid name they gave it) gearbox!

Can't deny the oil pump issue - although it seems to be the earler engines that are most prone. Think my post is the last in that thread asking how to tell which engine you have. It affects all the 2.0TDI engines.

The DPF filter can be removed and mapped out. Might do this if it plays up. First thing I will do is clean the EGR valve first.

Injectors are under "unofficial" recall it would seem so once my car arrives I'll be on the phone to the local Audi dealer to have them checked.

Mines the 6 speed manual, mothers is the 7 speed multitronic slushbox.

We are going to put a bet on who's A4 throws up the first 4 figure bill first

I went looking for an A4 S-Line 170 last year. I test drove 4 of them and have to say, wasn't impressed with them. The engine seemed rattly and under powered, The steering wheel felt thin, No cruise, No centre armrest.
I looked at a 330d M Sport Touring on a 08 plate and never looked back. Far superior car in every respect

The injectors typically fail by "short to ground", which also puts the injector driver offline. I.e. the engine immedaitely stops running/producing power.

IMO if you can get the DPF removed and a remap done, the car will drive better AND return better MPG. Leave the cat in place though as that does a reasonable job and isn't much of an issue.

My choice would be a A3 PD140 sportline or similar, I think. Do not look in the project cars section of darkside developments to see what they've done to their Jetta.

Nice car, but not great engines IMO.

I had an A3 with the 2.0 TDI 140 and it wasn't great. All the power comes in in a big lump between about 1500-3000rpm, then it slumps. I had mine remapped to 170bhp which improved the performance obviously, but made it quite smokey when accelerating and the clutch soon started to slip.

There seems to be an issue with the turbos on these engines too - mine started making the 'owl noise' - a wwooo noise (not the usual turbo whistle). Couple of other 2.0 TDI Passats at work made the same noise, and one then blew its turbo and I decided to get rid of the A3 shortly after before mine went!

MPG is potentially great however - used to average about 50mpg, but on a long motorway run taking it easy you could average 70mpg on the trip computer.

The problem petem95 describes is the same as my turbo had stated above, touch wood its fine on the new turbo with better internals.

Fords of course have their own issues but on balance seem to be cheaper to fix.
