Oh no! I'm in trouble now!
Bragging rights on the new 991 911 are going to be short.
Beaten into third place by the older GT-R and the Audi R8 V8 (yep, not even the V12) in the evo Group Test!
Damn

Just about everyone I know who's driven the 991 say the steering isn't that good.
However, only 0.09% of the Porsche buying population who read these tests will be bothered by that.
It won't matter one jot to the 'normal' buyer, so Porsche will sell shed loads of them.

Well, out of those 10 or so people, 2 have put an order in and mentioned the steering really didn't detract from the overall feel of the car, and made no difference to them.
One described it as similar to an EP3 Civic Type R.
From my memory of having one of those cars, that's not good!

Just hope the rumours aren't true regarding giving the next GT3 PDK only. Porsche should give the masses PDK option on the run of the mill 911, but leave the GT cars for people who want to drive the car, rather than have the car drive them.

Mate of mine has been a porsche nut for ages and got a 997 Carrera last year. Because his sister works for Porsche he was invited to the launch and has driven a few now, he hates the steering to the point that when he replaces his current he can't bring himself to get another unless its fixed.

Interesting this, because the NSX had electric steering and it worked fine. Ironically, a car modelled on the 993.
Matter of fact its the only electrically steered and drive-by-wire car I have ever driven that actually had the right feedback and throttle response.
I suppose a small point is that the electric steering was inactive above 20mph as the front of the car is that light it could easily be steered when stationary with the ignition turned off!
Maybe if Porsche went back to its roots and did the same or ditched PAS altogether it'd get the feedback back. I loved the pre-993's non-PAS steering...but it was a much lighter car. At roughly 1500kgs the 991 is a lard bucket compared to a 2.7RS

Even my Jag has better steering feedback than some modern stuff, admittedly a terrible car from the stone age to compare with, but it does have a XJR-S steering rack and geometry; The original rack's weight and feedback can be compared to that on a F10 BMW - totally remote and numb.
Don't forget to add fat arsed driver and extra items on the options list...I bet the PDK 'automatic' weighs a bit extra.

That's half the fun though, it's like playing a real guitar vs rock band on xbox. Of course if you have no skill it will be a horrible and embarrassing experience but mastery brings its own rewards.

I don't drive lots of cars like you. I think that last VAG I drove was a hire car Ibiza 1.2 TSI which was not that slow but was a terribly disconnected experience. Steering was like a video game steering wheel. Everything was a nasty plastic inside worse than Jap cars.

Two different issues here. Nothing wrong with a well designed dct/semi auto box. There will always be those who make ridiculous statements like they prefer to drive the car than the car drive them. Perhaps this is gheyer code for saying they are active rather than passive when it comes to c5ck and bum fun?
Electric steering is another matter, as yet it is horrid. I have it on my car and hate it and will not buy another car with it unless they can make it feel 'proper'
I think Porsche will put electric steering and pdk on the gt3 and you'll have to buy a gt3 rs if you want normal steering and manual box
