In many ways I really like the Focus. The chassis is nothing short of sublime, giving comfortable compliant control, good levels of driver engagement, and fun too.

I just can't get on with the high seating position though, and the total lack of go in all the engines. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0l seem pretty much the same to me. Oh and there's the strange high gearing...

I've owned all the above, but never a Mazda 3, which after all is built on the same platform.

So, does the 3 better my Focus shortfall list, and do the engines have any more go?

Would also consider the 2.3MPS
