One of the lads at work is originally from SA. He brought across his Mazda MX-6 a few years ago, but is having problems getting it through it's MOT due to emmission problems.

A few of the dealers in Scotland wouldn't even talk to him about it, but one or two were willing to help. Apparently, the ECU needs to be re-mapped to alter the emmission levels.

Does anyone know of Mazda specialists in the UK that he could contact?

Theres a company called Ro-Tecknics which is based near Reading (Grazely I think) that specialise in Mazdas of all guises.
