Default You want a what sir? A manual?

Looks like the end of the manual gearbox is getting closer and closer. Shame.

How long before all it's cars are DSG only?

Other manufacturers will follow suit.

Would be okay if all this stuff were ultra reliable and cheap to fix if it did go wrong. Boss has had two rebuilds on his BMW 330D slush box costing several £k a time, okay it's not the same as a DSG, SMG etc., but you still think it would be much easier to sort on a manual.

Wasnt aware of problem with the DSG on the BMW's but heard quite a few about the VAG ones. Guessing with everything - its got more parts so more things to go wrong.
Is it more expensive to change the clutch part of a DSG gearbox as well compared to a normal manual gearbox ?

The SMG gearboxes and quite possibly DSG boxes are actually Manual gearboxes, they are the same Hardware with extra actuators, pumps etc on them so the box itself will be as reliable as the manual version, just the ****ty little bits around it!

The SMG's had issues with springs, pumps all sorts and they were expensive fixes.

I don't understand why the US gets to keep manuals and EU don't..... the Americans can't drive bloody "stick shift" I think the person taking the minutes i nthat meeting got the orders around the wrong way !

Don't forget the current RS3 is DSG only too (cough, sorry, S-tronic for the Audi fanboys )...and AVANT (estate) only - some of us do want a 3 door you know.

DSGs are a bit more complex that that; two gearboxes and two clucthes in one unit.

SMG is pretty similar to a manual barring the selecting mechanism, which is more like a motorbike gearbox - where there is a grooved drum that selects gears rather than a rod with a load of forks on it.

Still, when fitted to a road car - both types are for pooftas.

As for Americans not being able to drive 'stick'. Maybe so, but at least manufacturers listen to their demands (the option to have a manual).

Interesting to note the worlds strongest manual boxes (Tremec, Richmond etc) are American. The reason why they are stronger is debatable; it could be due to the torque from the engines that are bolted to them, or the drivers...probably both.
