Track car
#1
Got thinking the other day instead of trashing my own car I'd buy a pure track car instead.
Any thoughts as too what would be good, I was thinking maybe Golf 16V, Astra 16V, 205 or 309 1.9 or a 2.8 Capri.
Needs tobe cheap and fun.
Or u may know where one is......

Well, out of the cars you've listed...
Golf 16V - Fast, decent handling, but bits aint cheap,
Astra 16V - Fast, but handling is not great,
205 1.9 GTi - Fast, superb handling, cost nowt to fix,
309 1.9 GTi - Similar to above but not as quick,
2.8 Capri - Fast... until you reach a corner!
I got myself an R5 GT Turbo for £250 of a lad I know, just for playing with on trackdays and it's great.
It's totally stripped out with a bucket seat, harnesses, uprated clutch, full SS zorst, dump valve, induction kit, re-jetted carb, running a bit more boost, better brakes, etc...
Basically, it weighs f*ck all, goes like stink and doesn't stand me at much so if I smash it up, I'll just strip the bits off it and scrap it then pick up another for peanuts.
Beats wrecking your everyday car!
Out of the cars you listed I'd pick the 205 if I didn't have the R5 as they go well, handle superbly and are cheap to buy/run/fix.

Ignore front wheel drive cars
Capri 2.8i - Good engine, bit too tail happy, parts easy to get
Sierra XR4i - Good engine, better handling, parts easy to get
Nissan 200ZX - Cheap, bits not as easily available

I've bought a Charade GTti for this use for just £600. Should be able to get 160bhp out of it for a few hunderd quid. I've been out in one of this spec and it was way faster than my Scoob. Not so sure about the handling but it seeme dOk rather than great.

Not sure about the XR4 being a better handler than the Capri. Car magazine certainly didnt think so when they did a head to head test in the late 80s.
The big motor Capris do it for me closest to a muscle car you can get. XR4i is just too ordinary in comparison.

AllanB,
Take a look at this months Car and Car Conversions Mag (CCC).
They have a piece on Stock Hatch Racers, one of which is similar to yours and seems to have been very effective.
.....
For a bit more moola, what about an old 944. Surely parts prices are low these days?
Dave.

If you're looking at RWD, there's also the sierra 4x4 - RWD biased 4WD. - have a look at www.xr4x4.co.uk
You can easily pick one up for under £500. They need a bit of weight removing - lots of trim & electrical kit to get rid of.
For some reason, they are often cheaper than 4i's.
It has some advantages over the 4i in the wet. (I'm planning to fit a 4x4 rear axle (with LSD) to my track 4i later this year).
Any car's probably going to need springs/shocks replacing, seat/harness - not much change out of £500 there. I'd recommend a cage as well - especially if you're going to buy a small FWD hatch - not much metal in those.
This month's CCC is worth reading on this subject - you can pick up one of those stock hatches for £2-3K
