We have a 206 & a 406 hdi's - superb in fuel & everything cheap to replace.
Just done the headgasket on my 406 estate @ 158k miles.
Excellent for tip runs, part time 7 seater, fence posts & supermarket car parks!
I did have a 306 td that ran on biodiesel at £1 per litre!

ive got a corsa 1.5 diesel here that I got as a mot failure project to keep me busy inbetween looking for a new job, its all done and ready for mot but as im still not working I cant really afford the mot, yours for £400 its runs perfectly the engine sounds and runs like swiss made watch, new sills both sides, brakes sorted, new alternator, new battery, new stereo, and its had a full service. oh and its done under 100k!
they are reported to do around 50 to 60mpg.

Audi A4, VW Passat, Peugeot 306 if you're short or drive lying down, Citroen ZX. If buying French, buy with as basic electrics as possible. Preferably consisting of 2 wires and maybe a fuse!

if you want a cheap diesel, French is the way to go imo.
mrs had a 1.4hdi 206, good little car, did about 60mpg but was a bit gutless on motorways and the economy wasn't as great if you wanted to drive at 80 everywhere as needed a bit of pushing.
i've got a 406 2.0hdi (110bhp version) as my commuter, do about 12k a year on it so quickly paying for itself rather than using the scoob. i average 52mpg in that but its a big comfy motorway car, bit saggy in the bends but depends on what you want

We've just bought a 2.0hdi 206, ok it was over a grand but there are plenty under the 1k mark. A little 'un-refined' in the engine department but nippy and very economical. Perfect for my missus who zips up and down the motorway to work. I had it averaging 80+mpg on the trip meter yesterday

I have an 01 Seat Leon with the 1.9Tdi ALH engine - I doubt it is worth much more than £1K although it is kept in tip top condition there are 165K miles on it which are all mine, it returns 50mpg regardless of how I drive it and low 60's on a long run. Mine is not for sale - but can recommend them highly.

If you double your cash, you can get a 1.5dci clio which does 60-80mpg and cost £30 a year to tax. My old 306 d-turbo's (had x2) managed low 40's a best. I'm wanting a £3k diesel runner, fiesta or yaris diesel for me I think.

I can recommend the Clio DCi, I bought one last year for £2k and it has easily paid for itself by now.
£30 per yea to tax, and 60 MPH + and that's driving quickly in it.
You can get the 5 door versions for around £1k.

i had a n/a 306 diesel
sooo sh*t, no power atall, always breaking down , always crashing the thing - couldve been my driving there lol
i wanted a tdi, but this one came up and was cheap - but in the end, was rubbish.
my mk7-8 or whatever fiesta 1.4 tdci is great tho - but i reckon the older ones will be well down on price now - altho watch the tax bracket
one is something like 7g co2 over the limit, taking it out of the £30 a year bracket
