The practicality of owning a 7 series BMW.
For example a 2006 730d SE. You can get one for 16k from BMW, with average mileage.
I checked my insurance, £420, VED £260 and 35 mpg. Seems great value and they are absolutely beautiful cars. They are just very unfashionable, as everyone is down-sizing for fuel economy.

Anyone any idea of servicing costs.

Costs you have mentioned above are very reasonable ,so why drive around in Fiat Punto or VW Polo ,you may as well have some style .!

I have been running a 525d for some time and its brilliant. Service it myself and anything I can`t manage goes to an Indy...there are loads about. Now done 130K with only service parts and a fuel pump being needed. If you do go for it, check if it has swirl flaps in the inlet manifold and if it does get rid of them!!
Simon at E-Maps is well regarded for a remap...well worth it.

parts, like tyres I'd imagine are a fortune.
if it does go wrong, it'll be expensive.
can't see 35 mpg being true !!!!!
but I totally agree-awesome car for the money.
a friend had a 740 petrol: amazing car but even he got shut when problems started to appear. I bet he'd be earning 6 figures a year too. he shifted to a M, 5 series BMW instead.
If I remember rightly I think the front strut exploded, bursting through the upper, inner wing on the motorway- which was the point for him to get shut of the 7 series.
but who could predict that ?

I don't think parts would be that expensive. Surely the engine is the same as the 330d engind in the 3 series so 35mpg should easily be attainable. Tyres won't be cheap but they won't be expensice, they are only 18's so aren't exactly low profile.
