Default question for mechanics.knocking noise

wifes car is a mazda 3.
its started making a constant knocking noise similar to when i forgot to tighten my wheels bolts.it is silent during acceleration.most noticable when coming up to a junction off the gas.goes away when brakes applied.also does it in neutral when approaching a junction.it sounds serious but ive been all over it and cant see anything amiss.my thoughts are gearbox or differential.its def related to front drive area.brake calipers are secure.as are wheels.

anyone like to hazzard a guess.

Have you been abroad recently ? If so you could have a trapped illegal immigrant in the boot thats struggling to get out.

Try clutch in and out, likely to be gearbox related, unlikely to be engine related

Loose brake pad, pad material separated from the backing plate or a stone or debris trapped in the calliper or even a loose disk?
