Mondeo DMF woes - think i need a new car :(

Default Mondeo DMF woes - think i need a new car :(

So had the soot chucker in for it's annual service. Went to pick it up and the news wasn't good. One front broken spring and apparently the duel mass flywheel sounds very noisey. Didn't know that they got noisey - thought they just went???? Anyway does a noisey DMF mean there is impending doom? I know if it does go there with be a near £1k bill coming my way. Is it time to get rid?
I do towards 30k miles a year and spend 80% of my time on the motorway. The mondy sees around 48mpg so i want at least that or possibly more while sitting around 80mph.

I hate the DMF in my ST220. It feels horrible compared to a single mass flywheel and mines was very slightly noisy with a vibration when I got the car. Within 3 months it got worse to the point that the car wasn't fit to drive. I got the DMF replaced under warranty and, had I paid the whole bill, it would have cost me £850.

If you can hear or feel yours (at idle mines had an almost imperceivable shudder throughout the whole car) then it is probably just a matter of time. The DMF was like £250 but you might as well change the clutch when you are in there £150 and then you have labour.

cost wise buy the conversion kit,just make sure you clean the starter out as if you run the dmf this way for too long all the filing end up in the starter.

Conversion kit? Is that a cheaper option?
Just been looking at Fabia VRS's. Love the wife's but probably gonna be a right pain finding a good one. The new Fabia PD Sport 105's also look ok. Not as pokey as a VRS butbetter MPG - anyone have any experience?

We had ours done, first indication was the starter motor not engaging due to all the stuff out of the DMF. Cost just over a grand I think including clutch and new starter. Thing is, it had done about 115k so it should be good for another 115k now its done.

guy on the mondeo stoc or on stdrivers recently paid £540 all in for a replacement flywheel and clutch (dont know if he went dm though)

if look round there is cheaper options but long term will cost less as dmf can start to go anythin past 60k depending on driving style ,where fit a normal one and will more or less out live car now

conversion kit so no dmf

Thanks for the link. Is the DMF not there to guard against shudder (for want of a better word) form the diesel engine through the transmission and thus protecting it?

Anyone done a DMF on a Mondeo? The Engineer at work is willing to give it a bash for some beer tokens

failed on mine at 20K miles on a 12/13 mth old car. (09 plate) thank god it was covered under warrenty. £1200 otherwise.

That's my understanding. Takes some of the shudder and torque out.

i done a petrol last year and mate done his diesel few months before mine as he killed 3 starter motors,no ill effects of converting i know too ,plus there are many different diesels been running standard flywheels for years.
it seems ford and toyota think there a good idea for some reason,had a dmf flywheel in my focus st which spoilt it and most fail by 40k again plenty convert them.

clutch change easy enough to do with right tools but you have to drop subframe cradle a little for access .

svs - most have them, but it isnt a massive problem.

Brun, it is just a clutch change, only difference is the flywheel itself how it is composed. I think it was mentioned in the thread that its wise to change the starter, and also I think the clutch cylinder as this is a gearbox out job to change

just female torque socket for flywheel bolts.

they say you need the subframe alignment tool or somethin, but dont worry as you tighten all the bolts up it goes in exactly the same place just support the engine,once battery removed everythin will make sense.

You say just a clutch change - i've never done one. I'm pretty handy with a spanner though. Good info on the cylinder and the starter
Think i might take out a years cover with the AAand wait for the DMF to lunch itself

yes those ones ,will try get you right size as think have some old bolts in tool box

unless starter playing up be fine,hydraulic thrust bearing cylinder is a must.

easy enough if your handy
battery off
take passenger leg/driveshaft/hub out complete(spilt by bottom ball joint)
drain gear oil
gear box mount
any bolts holding gearbox to engine underneath and any sensor going to gearbox

on top
all plus plugs/loom/earths/air box out the way
unplug linkage cable if remember you press a button and they release
unclip hydraulic clutch pipe
all remanding bolts in casing
support engine
remove i think the 6 subframe bolts
support gearbox with a jack and give it a pull and wiggle.

Id like to know exactly what the owner did to finish it off so quickly

- mine packed up promptly 6 months after i bought it off a dealer ( previous owner , rep ) , but this was at 90k and i got 3/4 of it paid for under a warranty provided by the dealer


- im as smooth as poss in the hope of stretching it out for at least half that amount

i done ours virtually on my own 3 nights after work few hours each :-)
mainly towing that kills them early.
