Default Suggestions for a diesel estate. £3K-£4K budget

The wife is moaning her little citroen is to small for our growing family and she wants an estate car.
They are all so boring and samey I am having real trouble picking one.
I'd appreciate some input on a good reliable one.

It needs to be as economical as possible so probably diesel.
Cheap tax etc.
Not a 4x4.
Nice and reliable.
Budget is £3K-£4K

I used to have a 406 estae that drove well or i'm leaning towards a focus estate.

How big does it need to be?

C5 estate is massive if you want to stay Citroen. Just make sure the suspension is in good nick.

5t.

Vauxhall signum, not quite an estate but loads of space in it. Had a diesel one for a couple of years and wish i hadnt got rid of it, was getting 45-50 mpg and tax wasn't too bad

To be honest she hates the citroen so there is no loyalty there.
I do quite like the signum but how is it for reliability?
I reckon a 03-05 Passat is do-able within budget and vdubs just keep on going don't they?
I just want to get something that won't result in a phone call saying a wheel fell off or something went bang etc...

I'll be selling my Passat as I have just bought a VW transporter which is being converted into a day van.
Its an 03 plate 130 TDi sport estate , modified with coilovers , 19" wheels , tinted windows , rebuilt gearbox with a Quaiffe LSD , and a Revo map , its running about 175hp , it has Godspeed grooved discs and NDX bluestuff pads front and rear
It has 110k miles , and is very reliable , and in good condition , I will be advertising it for £4.5k ono

Cheers Ian

Taxi drivers swear by them and parts cheaper then Audi /vw
