Default Bugatti suffers terrible depreciation

You can pick up a 2008 car for a mere £650k!!!

OK - this is a lot. But it is a lot less than they cost and usually cars like this simply do not depreciate. Everyone clearly knows it is just an overblown Audi TT!

How much is a McLaren F1 now? Or an Enzo? Or an F40, or F50?

Doesn't help that the Veyrons cost stupid amounts of money to service.

That is interesting and shows that as you have said Trout the Veyron doesn't seem to have that collectors value that certain other very exclusive hyper cars have had in the past

Result!

Only another 246 years of hard saving, the sale of a kidney and lung, perhaps 2 armed robberies and I can afford one

they have no pedigree and arent linked in any way to the early cars... just a name and stratospheric price tag.... "a fool and his money" and all that

Don't those things actually cost VW something like £5M to make? Proper bargain then, at just over 1/10 more than what the sticker price should be.

I can't think who with enough money to have one would want one? Unless you've got enough to just be able to have it for the novelty, i.e. very wealthy. But tbh I would rather have a Ferrari, Lambo, etc, any day! Doesn't appeal at all.

I think it's about one upmanship isn't it?

People like you and I would love to have a Lambo/Ferrari because we love cars. For many people it's as much status symbol as a car passion and when all your mates drive Ferraris, Lambos, Astons you need something that can put them in their place.

Something that says to those around you...'you may be rich, but I am richer and here is the proof'

Not having a go at anybody who does that, its a personal chioce.

Still can't get excited over them despite the stats.

For a million Euros...

...a Veyron; a Pagani or a Ferrari 599 XX - you choose...

...Yep, too easy to eliminate one with no pedigree and no class!

I am not so sure of that. Many wealthy people are wealthy as they do not give their money away easily.

They also (optimistically perhaps) justify their garages as investments.

Whatever the answer - Veyron demand just isn't strong.

A near halving in price is a big hit however well off you are.

A lot of wealthy people got there and stay there by being thrifty.

A lot of people that get rich then do daft things don't stay rich for long.

I can top that!! A business acquaintance is worth over $20bn. He will not pay more than $50 on a watch even though he loved watches.

He has had a chauffeur driven Focus for years (even though it is totally bashed up) and finally only replaced it when it got a big hole in the drivers door when a lorry hit it.

When replacing it he turned down fantastic (free?) offers from Bentley, RR, Maybach, Merc etc to get a Mondeo!
