Default 'New' 5 series

What have they done!

The previous model was a great looking car, even the lower performance models look great. A really nice looking car and always fancied a nice 535d sport in grey. I loved how deep and aggressive they look, nice stance to them.

This new model is awful to look at, very weak looking.

Shame on you BMW!

Not keen on them myself after looking around a few. They just look like larger 3series motors which is a bit of shame.

The rear lights are straight off a Kia somerthing or other

The M Sport models look better, tbh.

When the last 5 came out it took me a few years to really get to like it.

Yep - agreed. Deffo a step backwards.
Just like what Ford did with the second gen Focus. How could they make it so boring looking compard to the original???

BMW seem to have forgotten how to make a good looking car. The new 3 and 1 series arent much better. The X6 is NASTY and the 5 series grand touring is a fugly pile of dump

Shame as beemers used to be gorgeous things! Bring back the Z1

Z4 Coupe was very nice and is the E92 M3. But there are a few stinkers in there. Works of art compared to any Scooby though

I think the new 5 looks okay.

It's not that bad is it? I agree things are becoming corporate but I think it looks quite 'tidy'. In an era of efficient shape and design you aren't going to get too many radical looking cars.

You're right, it's not that bad but if you're spending £40k why settle for a face in the crowd? As the OP said - the previous model was a great looking car, not radical but not looking like every other £40k saloon either.

Its followed the common ugly trend of having the horrible panel gap between the grille and bonnet. I hate that, its just a cheap tacky way of making the front bumper a one piece design.

Earlier BMs had the bonnet/gille/bumper intersection at the Kidney grile or made the grille part of the bonnet. I guess pedestrian safety is partly resposnsible for this, but the other part is to make the car cheaper to manufacturer by reducing the complexity of the body panels (this is often noted with Jaguars, but it look like BMW is following the trend )

They've also bowed to the terrible trend that all other manufacturers are doing by the incorperation of an oversized grille to hide how tall the front end is. It just makes it look like a cartoon. The same with the wheels, anything smaller than 18" looks silly because of how slab sided and tall it is.

I really don't understand why modern cars are so tall now. They say its for passenger space, but I don't see how; when a 1970's XJ6 could easily accommodate 4 adults and luggage, why does a modern execeutive car need to so much taller, longer and wider? And why the 5 series? If people wanted bigger they should have got the 7 series Seriously, park this new BMW against an e39, or a new XJ against a S3 XJ6 you'll see what I mean.

I prefer the shape i have to the F10.....

The interior in the F10 is a lot better than the E60's though..

I think there is an element of E39 styling, and this is reflected with the interior abeit a more modern version. I think BMW are trying, new 7 series, Z4 and X5 are all good looking cars compared to what is available in there respected classes.

I like them much better, than when the E60 first came out, but that version grew on me.

The M-Sport F10 look **** hot in my eye's and this just looks super hardcore...

like someone else said, took a while for the older 5 series to liked.

I guess efficiency and ped safety are big calls now though

I'll have one of the four in the middle, please:

Its clear when the ped safety started coming in to play - one piece plastic front end moulding, taller, more curved to 'scoop' the pedestrian off their feet etc.

I laughed my head off when I saw the E60 for the first time - Dame Edna Everage glasses, bizarre shape - now I like it. Similar with the E90 - looked like a Mitsubishi Carisma. Again I like it now.

Like the F10 already - so maybe I'll hate it in future years?!

X3 and X1 will never be liked - minging.

Still not sure on the 1 series - especially the rather awkward looking "coupe."

E39 definitely was a looker though from day one.

To just reaffirm my point: Crappy pics but you can see the F10 dwarfs the E39...it looks like its parked next a 7 series:

So basically they've pushed the bonnet in and inflated it over the years?

It's funny how some people always prefer the previous model. When the E60 first came out it was almost universally slated by everybody as being a pig and now people say they prefer it to the F10! I think some people always just prefer what they have grown accustomed to over the years.

I'd like to think I'm a not a blinkered fan boy of any one car or brand. The F10 has flaws which I am happy to discuss, but imho being fugly is not one of them.

The first pic above is also a particularly unflattering one.

Here (again!) are some more pics of mine. Though it won't get your heart racing like Ferraris or Maseratis best examples, for a large four door family saloon it looks right

I don't think it at all ugly, Ding.

It actually looks very 'grown up' and classy.
And as I said earlier - the M Sport looks way better than anything else in the range and far, far better than any Audi A6.

It will just take some getting used to, that's all.
