As that range of cars go's the clio is one of the best given the mid range punch when compared against the likes of the 180 peugeot or citreon, not the best build quality but you have to give and take lol.
Also good handling if you have the ***** to chuck it round and get it tripod style
MPG are like any car really in that how heavy is your right foot but late 20's to early 30's shouldn't be a problem at all when driven normally by the likes of us

My eldest has one on a 56 plate. It's awesome.
I CANNOT shake him off, although I tend to be a little less "adventurous" than him. It drives like any old Clio when yoiu want it to, but drop it a gear and away it goes.
He averages around 25mpg, but is only 24.
Lovely interior, nice seats even the Renault Sport ones, looks the part, and plenty of toys.
I'd have one.

Early Clio 197's are crap on fuel. The close ratio 6 speed gearbox revs the nuts off, even in 6th. Fuel economy from running reports in the magazines who had them on the long term fleet showed them averaging 25-28mpg. Nobody got 30mpg out of them in daily running. Later cars had changed ratios to make them a bit better on a run.

whilst not the same Ive just got a meganesport trophy. Its not earth shatteringly fast (less than 7 seconds to 60) but in gear its okay. Do about 100 miles per day and I am averaging just under 31mpg, thats mainly sat in m62 traffic!
It handles like its on rails as well, I have more confidence in the handling of the trophy than I did in my evo 8 (thats not saying it handled better but you know exactly whats happening in the renault)

I came up against a 197 in my 330 classic. It really suprised me and went round corners at frightening speeds. I backed off before it got silly but the 197 was seriously quick.
