My beloved's standard Ka has certain "issues" with its' brakes, namely that you need to make an appointment to use them rather than just press the pedal
As her birthday is just around the corner, I'm looking to get her new discs, pads, braided lines and DOT5.1, but to be honest, haven't got much of a clue as to what's best.
Anyone gone down this route and recommend any particular setup, or is everything much of a muchness at the "economy" end of the market ?

There are two types of brakes on the KA, most pre-2000 non specials (KA Black, Millenium etc.) and non ABS models have solid discs, the newer ones have vented, the vented discs are the same size as the Fiesta RS Turbo, Orion and Puma so you can buy uprated discs + pads to suit but you'll probably not improve on the solid discs very much.
Severn Valley do a big disc conversion for the KA, I think they use cossie discs and calipers but its something stupid like £800

Just spoke to our kid who works for Ford Racing and has done a lot of the development work on the KA Rally Challenge, he said use the standard Ford Puma/Fiesta calliper and disks with some Mintex pads.
This conversion means you can keep the 13" wheels and if it's ok to rally with it should be OK for the wife.

I've a very good friend whoworks on his Ka for a long time, he is using Mondeo discs and calipers and I think he found the good solution. (He planted a 1.6lt zetec S unit now)
check out his site for more information.
http://drive.to/ka hope this helps.

As it's the Ka with the solid discs, I'm more limited by what's available than if it had the ventilated discs, apparently.
Never mind, I've now got some nice shiny Tarox grooved discs and EBC pads to wrap up ... not that I should really bother, as I know I'll just be told they "smell funny".
What I saved on the brakes, I used for a set of lowering springs, which the chappy in the shop assures me will look "well trick" ... which I understand is a good thing

Make sure you order the correct springs, the rears changed on the 2000 model, some W plates were affected to...

My missus has a Ka, all I can say is 'Brakes are for Cissies', drive it like a real mini - don't slow down in the corners:
