My lad just phoned to say the steering suddenly got heavy. This is in an old 205 tdi. What should he do?

I said to check the fluid level first (he's never checked it) and look for leaks underneath.

Any thoughts as to what it could be?

It was the belt!!

Hope he hasn't damaged the pump but they are pretty tough so I am told.
