New(ish) 2nd car choices...
The impreza isn`t going anywhere, too much fun and lots of plans for it, however the mrs astra coupe has reached the end of its usable life, so its time for replacment.
It`s main use will be Claire`s work car, covers 20,000/year and needs to present quite a smart image. It will also ferry us about for weekends away or day trips etc
She has narrowed it down to 5 cars, which we are going to look at this weekend, all will be around 2007/2008 versions, just after anyones opinions views on these motors:
BMW 318d/320d 4 door/coupe.
I like these, lots of toys and look very comfy.
Mercedes SLK 1.8 Kompressor.
Smart looking, not sure on only having 2 seats.
Audi TT 2.0TFSI.
Her dream car, would be fun, but fuel could be prciey.
Astra 1.9CDTi twin top.
This is a much cheaper option, she just likes them, would save quite a bit of money.
Astra VXR.
Don`t like these, but she does, again pricey on fuel.
Gonna be a tough call I reckon.

Mrs Skeeter ran a merc SLK a few years back and whilst it looked lovely she said never again.
The ride was almost comically hard and the manual gearbox was dreadful. She ran the 300 which wasnt that fast so I cant help but think the 180 will be pretty underpowered.

Had the same scenario. But I just went for a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8SRi. 2 yrs old with 20,000 on the clock, so still in warranty. Just £7,500, so saved a packet compared to other cars I was considering. Loads of them about and best value car for the money I think. 38mpg and great motorway chomper with lots of room in the boot. Wife really likes it too. Done 5,000 faultless miles since we got it. I even think they look good

Dont know what your budget is but from your list it looks healthy,
I would suggest
Seat Leon FR or reference sport for a good diesel with the milage used
Golf
Audi A3
Or for a convertable I would go for:
VW Eos
Much less common than the BMW's and also the Audi TT, build quality will be excellent and a nice looking car
