For instance, I like the sound my growler makes, and the way it scares the sh*t out of people when I floor it. You scare cattle, with your diesel, because they think the farmer is coming in his tractor to take them to the slaughterhouse

mm and for me the nice dash is more useful on my stop start daily commute than handling. And Quattro makes it useful to get up the hill to my house. I suppose I'm lucky in the sense that I dont do enough miles to justify a diesel car, but I do have a simple formula,
- diesel in my off roader - petrol in my car !

Funny this whole dash/interior arguement. After I ordered the new 5 series I went to the audi dealer just to make sure I hadn't made a mistke. I sat in the A5 and A6 and thought both the dash and general quality and trim of the new 5 series was much better.
If anybody is interested I'd encourage you to pop into a bmw dealer the next time you are passing and check out the interior of the new 5. Its a huge leap from the e60.

I think Audis are waaaay to fussy inside. But maybe that's just me?
Rj - I also have a rule - RWD in my car, 4WD (proper 4WD) in my offroader.
You've clearly not driven any BM with a 35d unit - on then will you know the "truth" and you'll want one too.

What age was it? Early ones had less power and a fairly average gearbox. Later ones (2008 onwards I think) got 335d matching power and torque and a better slushbox.
Audi is faster - no doubt about it. And sounds better. But the BM does corners better and has a mysterious thing called "steering feedback" ;-)
Ermmm - FOR ME!

I'm intrigued to know what you mean by a fussy interior

S6
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/dri...icle607034.ece
Beyond terrorising other autobahn users, however, the S6 is somewhat disappointing to drive. It’s fast, and with four-wheel drive certainly secure, but the only reason it is engaging is because you feel every ripple on the road surface. Even on smooth German roads the ride felt poor, so expect it to be worse in the UK.

Really? Maybe you aren't the best judge?
Nik - cluttered, not very ergonomically designed...
Compared to a BMs clean design:

Does anyone actually trust what any car journalist writes ? Different people like different cars.
Its that the old shape A6 dash ? Not one of the best I agree but I dont think much to the swoopy BMW design or whatever they call it, especially with wood inserts (they should be banned in 99% of cars), and those pink leather seats.

Neither have a problem with their dashboards. The S6 is said by most of the motor press to have a very firm ride, but it sounds like it is no worse than a 535d on run flats from what alanbell says.

Oops- didn't realise I posted a wood dash version - indeed a crime to all cars. Seats are saddle leather.
I posted bits from four different reviews so I'd say they cover most angles.
A better example of the BM:
and the current S6...
John - a small outlay sorts the run flat issue. It would cost a lot more to sort an S6.
