I'd say the Golf. Had a GT Sport 170TDI, and it was a very good car. Think of it as a Golf GTI but with a TDI engine.
I'd certainly recommend one.

I wouldn't be so sure. I've got the 170 tdi engine in my Leon FR and it'll do 50mpg on a trip and thats not driving like Miss Daisy either. It'll do more if you drive like your granddad.
I'd go for the Golf out of the two.... but have you looked at the Seat Leon FR TDi 170? I chose it over the golf as I think it looks a better 5 door. Some good deals about for lease options at the minute, around £240pm on a 3 + 23.

Okay let's look at a few facts - sorry to resort to these but they help counter complete BS. Now I'm not actually all that keen on the 320d - too big a car for a four pot BUT it's RWD and liked by thousands. The Golf is a good car too but it's FWD (not great with a lot of torque) and not as well made.
Here you go...
Golf - 134g/km, 0-60 in 7.8s, 55mpg.
BMW 320d - 125g/km, 0-60 in 7.3s, 60mpg
And just for comparison, a 2005 (E46) 320i - 213g/km, 0-60 in 7.9, 31mpg

You are joking aren't you?!! Not only is the 320i one of the lamest engines, things have also moved on HUGELY in 5 years.

No not joking I owned a 320i convert that would have been heavy comparing to a saloon but it was slow and thirsty don't think it was any quicker than 8 seconds to 60mph 9(certainly sluggish compared to the previous Fiesta ST that I owned) and never did anything better than 23mpg.
That was petrol so consumption would be a lot different but if the petrol wasn't fun to drive the diesel sure as hell won't be.
The OP is looking at a price range of the golf so a newer BMW would probably be out of the picture.
E46 was a joke in my opinion the 330i was the one to have but that was mega thirsty apparently!
The only reason the E46 convert made me smile was for the 5 days a year dropping the top on it. If it was a hard top it would have been moved on within 2 month or never purchased.
They have a bad image and aren't really any more superior than a Mazda of the equivalent sized engine. People buy older BMW 's for the badge end of.
The new ones are a lot better and I would have a decent spec 5 series/6 series or z4 which are all very nice.

I've got an E92 330d 2006, consump gauge shows average of over 40mpg over the last 2 tanks and if you work it out rather than use the comp its normally slightly better so those figs for a 120d suck!

My 335d is meant to get 40mpg but gets more like 30 so I know figures are often dodgy but they are still "official" figures.
A 320d is a fair bit more than the Golf BUT if both are available, go for the BM. It's RWD, it has a great chassis, it's quick and economical, it's well put together.

0-60 must be the most pointless figures ever!

Over 44k of ownership of a 120d Msport I got 44mpg. Car was an automatic and new when I bought it, 07 reg with the slightly revised engine.
For 20k driving of my 03 WRX with PPP (bought from new) the same journey saw 30mpg - to give an idea of how I drive and types of road (mainly Mway)
For 20k in and Audi A3 - DSG and 140 break engine, I averaged 50 mpg

After buying a second car last year (RWD so **** in the snow) I had to decide what to change my daily driver too. I quite fancied a BMW 335D. But having 2 RWD cars just seemed pointless. And shelling out another £800-1000 for winter tyres didn't make sense.
So now the winter is here, opp North, I have my RWD car tucked away in the garage, while the daily driver has AWD.

Please may we not turn this into another winter, AWD, RWD but winter tyres thread etc.
The VRS looks really smart F1.
To the OP have you considered the Focus? You could get a pretty nice model and many think it is a better car than either the Golf or the 1 series (3 series being a slightly different style of car so not usually compared) and you save some £ as well. I guess that Ford badge doesn't make you as proud though when you see it adorning the bonnet.

Ok I have answered my own question when looking at the Focus. Didnt realise that the most powerful diesel is a weedy 134bhp, quite a bit shy of what you were after. I thought you could get the STs 155bhp in one. I think that Ford missed an opportunity in not including a performance diesel in the Focus range.

Its a shame they havent done a Focus ST TDCI. That would be a cracking car.
Have VW improved their reliability as they have been woeful over the last 10 years. This one of a few things that would make me turn to the BMW every time.
