My cousin has been bullied into looking at Large 4x4s by the missus. He's after a car for either:
(a) a few months including a LONG trip to France and approx 3,000 miles
or
(b) keeps.

He's looking at the £2,000-£4,000 range to keep depreciation down to a minimum.
He's already been offered a Range Rover '88 E for £2500 (including a 2-day "test-drive") by a mate.

Does anyone have any recommendations/web-sites/forums/bbs etc. on Range Rovers, Shoguns or similar where he can get info on Problems, things to look out for, buying tips, warranties, or reliable dealers who may trade vehicles of this sort of age?

Many thanks
SB

everyone raves about range rovers but then in the same breath rolls off what they have replaced...

If you want most metal for money consider LWB Frontera? They *do* have a bad reputation for quality and that pushes the prices down, yet my folks have had a 95M 2.2petrol for about 6years and no major hassles (apart from *that* plastic pulley wheel on the timing belt that affects all vauxhall Ecotec units of the era) Not my cup of tea but they do long hauls with it and happy with it.

Hmm - if thats the budget I'd say steer clear - he'll spend another 2k filling it up.

Better a renault espace - ex police volvo T5 - or passat estate
if a big car is required.

But the rr has a great engine that lasts forever. Or get a disco 2.5tdi

If he wants to get back from France wouldnt go in a Range Rover. Not the most reliable motors.

I've had 2 of them a C plater and a G plater , the C plater was the most reliable , the other one had 3 new ECU's , a distributer and a rear wiper assembly . They cost me a fortune to run and they didn't handle , but that aside it was a very nice interior with air con and leather electric seats . Fuel consumptionwas at best 19 mpg but often was about 17 . I would still have another but would get the newer diesel engined one .
