Seat Alhambra - VW engine with coil and distributor

Basically it won’t start - it nearly fired but sounded very lumpy then cut out. Now it will turn over but won't fire. No spark at the plugs or at the HT lead going to the distributor. On looking there is and earth strap coming from the coil which is broken and severed. I thought this would be the problem, but on holding it to the metal of the engine, it still won't start.

Any advice. I'm wondering if the earth strap breaking, it has killed the coil or does the earth need to have a more secure connection other than just holding it the metal of the engine.
