Default My Dad's MG Midget

My parents bought a 1979 MG Midget 1500 (the ugly rubber bumper one) back in about 1984 (= about 26 years ago). At that time it had 13,000 miles on the clock and had one lady owner.

He's just done a 600-odd mile round trip to visit us in it without any problems. It's now approaching 57,000 miles and has had no major mechanical, body or paintwork repairs since it was new.

It's still in reasonable condition, but by no means perfect. When you think about it, it's so simple that there's not much to go wrong!

What's the longest time of ownership anyone in your immediate family has owned a car?

1982 Jaguar XJ-s HE bought from new. Still have it. And still a pain in the ****.

Currently has a misfire on one or two cylinderd on the left bank, I'm guessing fouled plugs caused by a prior MAP sensor failure and the secondry ignition coil breaking down internally. Then there is the steering rack leak, its due for a new exhaust system, the passenger door mirror that self-adjusts when you floor the accelerator (intermittant earth path via the kick down switch).

So its not without its faults

No rust on the body though - a few gallons of waxoyl put an end to that. Mechanics are mostly original barring wear and tear items and the prone (steering racks, shocks and anything badged by LUCAS ).

We did a full restoration of a rubber bumber Midget about five to six years ago. But the owner cheated and provided us with a brand new bodyshell. Everything was rebuilt or replaced. In effect it was a brand new car when it was finished, actually it was better than new, as all the panel gaps were adjusted/machined so that they were all even.

Other notable full restos we've done was a Stag, and SIII E-type roadster.

My parents bought a white Ford Capri Laser brand new in 1986, I can just about remember going with them to pick it up as a 8 year old, its still in their garage now and only covered about 30,000 miles!

I wish they still had their mercury grey 2.8 injection though.
