Default BEC Owners callout (/caterfield)

Right then.

m3 is awesome so now time to go buy a new track toy.

Pretty sure im going to be going for a BEC.

Wondered who on here has one/experiances of one/any recommendations of owners clubs/places to purches things to look for etc etc.

On a couple of forums and now intend to spend the next few months researching before purchasing around christmas time.

Anyone trailer theirs?

Im after something hardcore track fast, but soemthing i can also take out on a sunday morning/passenger rides.

Reason for bec: Love the sound and the engines are cheap.

Quite happy to buy a ****ter and do it up. any recommended brands? Locost? Tiger etc?

Just after some general discussion/experiances on the matter really as they are usually crucial experiances.

Thanks in advance.

I've met Lee the owner of that car and that is a bargain of a motor you'd be getting there. He spent a fair amount of time looking in to getting a BEC before he took the plunge so you'd be pretty certain he chose a good one. The only reason he's selling it is because he's got himself a Porsche instead.

Are you on Locost Builders? There are some cars popping up on there from time to time in various stages of build (along with the normal PH classifieds).

Whereabouts are you in Berkshire?

Reading. Yeah im on locost, however ive not donated a fiva yet.

Still reading lots and tbh still got a bit more saving to do. But that looks spot on.

Still got my old focus to sell to fund the project.

Porsche would be nice

Have you been in a BEC? If not, I live just down the road from you and could meet up at some point to take you out for a drive in mine. The engine has less power than Lee's one but you'll get the idea of what it's like.

I had a Fury (Sylva) with a Kawasaki motor. Was a great car, sold it a few months back

You can brake so late, and carry so much speed into the apex. Brilliant cars. I did a lot of research and went with the Fury due to its design.

Worth giving it a look

scoobyc - I've just got to change a fuel filter over in mine to see if it cures a slight problem I've got. Assuming this works I'll be in touch and we can meet up for a spin.

A mate has a Mac 1 and that goes like stink .Uses it on the road for a Sunday drive and has done Track Days as well .

Also had a ride in a Hyabusa powered kit (could have been Westfield I think )car which really was fast ,noisy ,jerky ,but a lot of fun .

There Turbo Busas out there as well with about 300 bhp which would be awesome Im sure .

sounds good scott.

So what spec you running scott?

Im after something with a full cage ideally. R1 engine would be nice too. we shall see.

Yeah seen some of these turbo busa cars. 300 bhp & 500kg is pretty mental...

I'm running a 919 blade engine in mine with about 130bhp at the crank. If I could afford it I would be running mine with a turbo on it as well but as it's just a fun car I cannot really justify the money to be honest. No roll cage, various bits stripped out to save weight (main one being the reverse box) and some modified bodywork to aid cooling when on track.

ahh good stuff. that sounds pretty much what im after.

what axel/brakes you running? LSD etc?

Im pretty sure i want a full cage cos i really want to push it on track which will mean inevetable hitting something hard.

Not sure a roll loop will cut the mustard.

eyed up a couple but need to sell the focus first really.

How fast is it with that bhp? a turboed lump would be excellent.

Single driver up it's pretty quick to be honest but the moment you stick a passenger in there you do notice the lack of torque. Especially if you go up against a ZX12/Hayabusa sized engine. It's got Sierra brakes, Escort Cossie LSD (3.62 ratio) and other bits from Mini's, Sierra's, etc..

You'll find a lot of track day people don't have full roll cages in these cars but it is certainly worth considering if you can find one with it on.

Did a full build on a 'blade powered Westfield back in 2001. Sold it after 12 months of finishing it, but only because I needed to release the funds. It's something I WILL do again in the near future, but this time it will be a 'busa lump. As Scott states, with the blade lump on your own its awesome, but when you throw the weight of a passenger in, it makes a big difference to the performance.
To give you an idea, my 'blade powered Westie was 135bhp/456Kgs which is 296bhp/ton. That got me (with decent timing gear) about 4.1 to 60. It would max out at about 125 if I remember right due to the gearing. I could hit the limiter at 12500rpm in 6th before I'd got to the top of the motorway sliproad!
The noise is awesome, and the pops/bangs/flames from the exhaust on the over run were normal running 4 carbs.
Hmmmm...I need a fix!

A guy on here a few years back actually (a) either owned mine or (b) new the guy that did own it. I think his username was 'catflap' or similar.

that sounds exactly what im after!

busa lump would indeed be nice or an r1 lump is they seem to be well up on torque against the nija engines.

we shall see. got a bit more saving & researching to do first

should be good fun tho eh!
