where to go from an impreza?
ive had many cars in the past but I always end up back with an impreza, currently a 2002 bugeye wagon.
its costly on fuel and to be honest its not the most comfy of rides, my problem is I need something that is going to keep me amused but be semi sensible at the same time.
it needs to do a few things.
tow our 1100kg caravan (yes I know)
be better on fuel than the impreza
be practical as we have a large dog and a child, plus we would like another child in the near future.
still have the grin factor.
where would you go?

Did you see thr thread by Harvey about the Vectra diesel he mapped? That might tick all the boxes.

njkmrs had a 2003 mondeo tdci 3 cars ago, I didnt rate it at all, its even more plasticy than the impreza!
I guess another must is awd/ 4x4
drb I was thinking the same to be honest, maybe an a6 quattro tdi? just have no experience of them.

Not too worried about that to be honest .Its only a runaround so ,a bit of oomph ,with a bit of frugality will do .!!!!
But yes, if you have been there done it then maybe the A6 is the way to go .A couple of lads at work have them and they are quite impressed .Worth a look .

magneel/merv I actually went to look at a 4 litre a4 quattro before I bought the bugeye, s series? cant remember for defo but it had the flared arches, it was very nice, the fuel economy or lack of put me off somewhat though great looking car though.
a mate of mine helped design the bowler wildcat as they are only made 2 miles away, ive had a few blasts in them, unfortunatly nowhere for the dog to sit
anyone any experience of the a6 2.8 quattro avant? just wondered if the figures for mpg are near to correct, I think I could put up with 32 mpg. seems a little high for such an engine though.

the scoob is ok for now, im in no rush.

Need to be the facelift E46 at least though, to make it worthwhile.
E60 is the same weight as the E46, so you have to look for one with the more powerfull engine, to get your moneys worth. If anything, the E60's are cheaper to buy now than the newer E46.

What sort if budget?
I would recommend a 330d or 335d Touring but they are cr4p on wet grass as often found in caravan sites!
Would probably look at either an Audi 3.0TDI (so quattro) or go slightly leftfield and look at Volvos excellent estate cars - D5 V50 for a little estate (sooo stylish IMO), possibly an XC70 (off roaded V70 with AWD) D5 if you need more space.

Saab 9-3 Vector Sport 150bhp, can come with alot of toys and is a very solid car and is very good for the money compared to BMW's Audi's etc....or a Volvo V50 SE Sport, one of the best looking estates about i think.

A 9-3 is basically a Vectra with a bigger price tag. My wife's uncle has one and it had pretty much no advantage (smaller boot too) to our old (and sold) Astra Estate 1.9CDTi 150. In fact it's slower, more cramped and worse on fuel despite having the same engine.
Modern Saabs (and Alfas) are just overpriced Vauxhalls.

Legacy diesel estate.
Ok not as quick as the Impreza and not one of the 'badge ' brigade, but.. a comfortable effortless cruiser with loads of room, economical to run, tows great and still has a really good chassis with AWD grip.

BMW 330D is where I went. Not remapped yet, but planning to as soon as funds permit. Usable power/speed very similar to the hawk WRX that it replaced, but comfort and economy are waaayyy better.
