I'd be interested to know whether all those who don't like it or think it's a step backwards from the E60 also hated the E60 when it first came out?
I like it, it's understated and not trying to attract attention. To me it looks like a modern version of the E39 which to me is a design classic. A well kept E39 still looks smart today (in my eyes)
Btw, Scoobydoo 555; how do you do that with the pics?

The E39 is a design classic. How can you not like this?

Class dear boy, class. Simple, understated, but still looks good today almost 20 years after it was first designed

I agree the car can look quite plain, but don't forget what you've seen so far on the roads is probably a vanilla 520d with 16inch std alloys. An E60 in that form also looks a bit plain despite the bangle styling.
I find that with all BMWs (the current 3 series included) they only start to look good with the M Sport body kit and some larger alloys. I'll reserve final judgment until I see the Msport in the flesh in a few weeks time

I thought this looked dull at first compared to the old E60, but it's started to grow on me! Seen a few on the motorway and they look like the car equivalent of a very smart suit!
Loving the massive grilles - makes the front look very imposing.
Absolutely hated the old E60 when that came out, but I grew to like that too!
Liked the E39 in its day but those look like very dated now.

I like it and will be interested in the nippy Tourer once it comes out here.
Had a 5GT behind me at the weekend for a while - now that is one ODD looking car. Like a big shiny squatting toad with massive "eyes." Very strange. Bit slow too (not sure what engine it had) ;-)

I've seen a black one now (no idea if it was the M Sport version or not) and it looked very very nice indeed. I'm sold on it now, the 5 series, in a dark colour is a very smart looking car.

Seen this up close @ BMW HQ and it is much better looking in the flesh.
On an interesting note, was talking to a bmw engineer this morning, and apparently BMW own the rights to the twin scroll design modern turbos now use!! I did not know that.
If anyone designs a turbo with twin scroll, they have to pay BMW a royalty!!
