Turns out it's a common fault that used to happen on the 360 & 430....
Unburnt fuel vapour by the exhaust.....
There has been a petition to get Ferrari to modify the design (something that owners in the know do anyway)
Documented on F-chat.
Scary though.

My mate's 360 F1 had a small fire in the gearbox area when it was new - the dealer whisked it away VERY quickly.
He has a 458 on order, so no doubt he'll be keeping an eye in the rear-view mirror!
