I'm looking at a change in cars and while i've mainly been looking at A4 Tdi's, i've found myself looking at the 335d. My questions are what are servicing costs like on these and what sort of mpg do you get, road tax etc. I know they are different to the A4 in lots of ways, but luxury's and mpg is what i'm after most plus i've been told they are pretty quick cars when you want them to be.

So is there any downsides to this car? What is the auto like on these, i've driven the 03 M3 CSL alot and liked the auto/paddle shift set up. Is there known problems/faults on this model? Any model i should get/avoid? I would trying for an M sport.

So many questions i know and i'm sorry if they have been asked before.

My cousin has got an 57 plate 335d coupe and to be honest it is a very very good car in all different ways. So nice to drive plus the paddle shift gearbox is very good. He has had it since new and not one problem has gone wrong with it. The only thing with it, is that it is to small inside. If you got kids and dog etc it's small but other than that you can not fault it. I will say that it is really quite surprising how quick it is, off the line plus up top end. He says he gets about 45mpg driving it half like a **** and half being like ya gran. Love the toys in them too, loads to play with.

Not to sure about services etc. But overall very good and nice.

You getting rid of scooby for it??? nnnnnoooooooooooo

Aaron - I have a 335d Touring - had it for 9 months.

I get low 30s to the gallon (I do drive it hard), the auto box is extremely good (especially is sport mode) but still an auto, the "flappy paddles" are useful but TBH the auto box is good enough 90% of the time and the torque is lots and lots of fun.

Servicing (mine's due in 3000 miles) costs are okay and intervals are massive.

Most dyno over 300bhp (once run in) and they are properly rapid - quicker than factory figures. 5.5 to 5.7 to 60, 13.3s to 100 but it's the mid range shove that's really fun. They even sound good too (when revving).

They also handle extremely well.

Thanks Mattee, when you say massive intervals do you mean like the Audi which is 24months or 20k?

Oh and is the seat height adjustable as i'm a short ar*e

I have a 335i and a mate has the 335d both have adjustable seat height. Mine is on intelligent servicing and id depends on how you drive it etc. Mine says its not due anything till another 15k miles or mid 2011. I think servicing will be about the same between the Audi and the Beemer.

I agree with everything Mattee boy said above and I couldn't believe how nice the diesel sounded (nowhere near as nice as the petrol though) . My mate with the d drives like a granny and get 38mpg but it's always on short runs as he only works down the road and is constantly picking his kids up from school etc.

Yep - seat adustable and fine for 5'8" me and 5'6" Mrs Matt.

As Jim says, it's usually variable depending on how hard you drive it - mine was on 16k (to the next service) when I bought it - it had just been serviced. You can get 20k intervals if you treat it (too) gently. I guess if you don't do many miles, you could get 24 months but I'd rather get any car I own checked annually for piece of mind.

The very earlt 335d engines suffered turbo issues, however any of the n57(x or y) engines after 56 generally are very robust. What else you want to know? The interior is slightly smaller than that of the a4,but capable in nearly all of lifes little trials and tribulations.
Get the software updated when you buy it as it will generally improve the speed of the "i drive" (if you get one that has it fitted)

Could have a an impact on whether I extend the warranty or not!

You have a good'un! Just checked using your chassis against bmw's "puma" database of known/common faults. You came up with no issues regarding the engine or turbo! Lucky you, just keep on top of servicing and let the turbo warm up/cool down blah blah blah and i think you'll have a long happy relationship with your bavarian battleship.

I obviously checked it very thoroughly before buying it (with 16k miles on it) but good to know anyway.

To the OP - I'd never EVER though up to a few years ago that I'd be sneaking out to have blasts in a diesel auto estate car (!!) but I do quite often - the handling and power are just heaps of fun and you don't come across many quicker cars (especially in Cornwall!).

Whats the RFL rate for a 335D currently? Got a mate looking at 3yr old 335i's but he does quite a few miles so I mentioned the 335D.

Thanks guys, well i've been looking at around 07 plate cars. Mileage, well not sure really i've done just over 3k in a year in the scoob which is one of the reasons i'm changing want something that i'll drive more as the girlfriends car is used for going long distance and shopping as my scoob is more of just a fun car that i usually drive by myself. The 335d is becoming the best of both worlds to me more and more

Updates are done within the bmw dealerships, and no it's not free im affraid. It's an hour and a half labour charge from bmw @£198 per hour! (Hexagon BMW rates- they do vary)You do the math.
Where you based Aaron?? I might be able to "hook a brother up" hehehe

TBH i like the look of both so it's not a big issue really, i've seen a few nice 4 doors but only a couple of coupe's. My car is being viewed tomorrow so hopefully i can start to look properly after then.

Also i've been reading a bit about them and a few people have remapped them with excellent results is this something that the car can take? clutch gearbox etc? I've read as much as 350/516 from this That would make it a quite interesting car all the benefits of luxury mpg with brilliant performance.

azz - Evolve and DMS do good remaps.

I'm leaving mine alone as it's plenty quick enough but most seem happy with their remapped cars. I just think the drivetrain is already under a lot of pressure and a remap just pushes it too hard.

Holy ****, £198 per hour. Am I living in the past, or is this ridiculously over the top for a BMW dealership? Thats the kind of price I would expect to pay at a supercar dealership.

That's what i was thinking, i'm going to be happy with the car just wondered if the remap is recommended. I won't be risking expensive repairs.


I can't quite believe that hourly rate either, i wonder how much the technicians get paid

OI!
London dealers have very high overheads. Plus we don't charge an hour for an oil service for example, we charge 15 minutes!! So you only pay £49.50 labour for a job that is never a 15 minute job (more like 25 minutes)
We don't get paid that well actaully. VW techs make more per hour! You get chaps like me. Qualified technicain with 11 years experience with full BMW uk training and ata accreditation! Plus police clearance to fix their cars, plus d32 assesor so i can train the techs of tommorrow.
Anyway, i'm off to polish my Veyron

That was kind of my point mat, that there is no way that you guys get that much in fact id be surprised if a basic level techie gets even £15 hour.

Surely cars sales take care of overheads, there is absolutly no reason to charge that much and the reason (in all marques) that they lose buisness to independants IMO.

If i get one however i'm more than happy to pay you to fly up here and service it for me, at mates rates of course
