Got myself a T5
Just bought a Volvo T5; a 1997 V70 CD.
Succumbed to old age and got a Volvo. Crazy performance for such a big barge. It feels quicker than the Fiat 20V Turbo I recently had and gets to 3 figures in no time, and does late 30s mpg on a run
Badged as V70 R but the last owner wasn't sure if it's an R or a normal T5. On looking at peformance figures, the CD T5 is exactly the same as the R version, so I'm not sure if it's an R or not.
Really impressed with it. Must be up there with the bang for buck motors for what id does and how well equipped it is.
Anyone know what differentiates an R from a T5?

It's dark grey/black. It was the 850s that came in yellow.
Yes, still got the 123. She's going strong and not spent a penny on it other than the usual consumables. Did a 540 mile round trip to Wales in last week without a murmur.

I dont know if its the same with the V70, but the 850T5R was only different from the T5 by means of an uprated ECU.
Regardless of it being the 850 or V70, they are great cars. I took this one on the 2009 scumrun rally
and it was biblically fast. I managed to out accelerate team fast car's Toyota MR2 all the way past 110mph with all that crap strapped to the roof The Irish lads on the rally nicknamed the car "Terminator" on account of the fact that "It just wont feckin' stop" Its ability to eat the miles was only matched by its ability to suck in fuel when we were toeing it. Normally, it did 350-360 to the tank, on the last day it was a ***** out race to the ferry and I drained a whole tank in 225 miles
You got the estate? take it from someone who knows, burning people off at the lights when you have a sofa in the back never gets boring
Great cars, I still miss mine

We loved ours, it was fairly quick, standard T5 manual, with no aircon, the "Club Sport" version
Didnt think it was quicker than the Fiat Coupe I had but you could trust it to last a whole journey without expiring.
They last very well, with a little care they are bombproof.
225 to a tank, that all we ever got !

It's the estate version, and has every option I can think of other than sat nav; although I think that wasn't an option in 97.
1st one I've driven so was really shocked by how quick they are. It's an auto, so slow to 30, but after that it just pulls hard to big numbers.
It attracts more idiots that want to race than the MR2 Turbos I've had, or the Fiat Coupe Turbo.
Full MOT, 6 months tax, 121k, FSH and less than a grand! The last owner spent £500 on new tyres too, a couple of months before I bought it, and it has a new exhaust.
I was sus about it, but have been nothing but impressed by it so far. The only fault it has is a (very) slight PAS fluid leak.
But it does guzzle with my right foot.......

V70R came in x2 guises - FWD & AWD,
The FWD came with 17" 'R' wheels, 'R' suspension, 'R' front bumper, 'R' leather/alcantara, 'R' dials, both front seats were electrically adjustable, 'R' steering wheel, and featured top spec CD player with 3 stack in the dash and had heated seats, cruise, climate, sunroof etc. Performance wise it had a Mitsubishi 18T turbo in the manual variant with LSD which served up 250hp. 10 more than the standard 16T turbo found on the stock T5. The auto was the same as the stock T5 under the bonnet though.
The AWD variant had a haldex system available in manual or auto and had a Mitsubishi 19T turbo and 260hp. Thanks to the rear diff, the exhaust came out the other side to the non AWD cars. Some mods include adding another pipe the other side for the twin pipe look.
All 'R's had exclusive colours available over and above the stock T5's.
So there are a few differences to a stock car.

Cheers, Andy.
Mine looks exactly like your old one, except the wheels on mine are darker.
Mine has all the features you list other than R dials, no electric passenger seat and no 3 stack cd player. It's got a 6 changer in the boot, though.
I guess it's been facelifted by someone to look like an R. Being an auto it has the same performance as an R auto anyway...

My S70 was chipped by RICA to an alleged 305bhp. Quick in the dry, front Toyo T1s lasted 5k tops. Nice leather armchairs, cruise, fantastic stereo. Boughtmine at a year old and saved a fortune.

I used to have an 850 t5r and they are as fast as the 20v turbo fiat. I raced one.
Had it before the p1 but the urge for more blistering performace made me sell it.
Was a cracking car. Just ate the road up for fun.
The 850r was slightly more powerful at 250hp with limited slip diff. Different trim too i think.
Imagin the v70 would go along the same lines.

I do the same with classic mercs and it's paid off very well .
I got 38mpg on a 100 mile run @75mph with the cruise on, but that only by the trip computer! Mrs Pierre has just arrive in north Wales (290 miles) and averaged 32mpg with the car 4-up, inc. luggage...... And no cruise used.
Cost me £950. Happy with that outlay for the lump I got, considering the full MOT, tax and FSH.

I've worked this way for years! Find a performance car that's renowned for reliability, buy a good one, and just run it. Sell it on for normally more than I paid, and repeat.

Nice one FP, you also know about the oh so slight smug feeling when you see a *** in a shiny new car, spewing pound coins from the exhaust as the car depreciates faster than a Pasty at WeightWatchers meeting

What if it's a nice person in a shiny new car who doesn't give a monkeys about depreciation but wants the latest models? There are plenty of those around too.
Cheap motoring is great but it's not necessarily "right."
Some have said that the 850 was better made than the V70 - is that true?

I do the cheap motoring thing because I do very few miles and don't need a car as such.
I'd cry if I was like my neighbour who does 2000 miles per month commuting, and has to pay for it all himself.

His clutch just cost him £950 to replace, but it's the 1st one after 100k miles in just over 4 years.
Poor, considering 98k of those miles is motorway stuff.
