Cool Golf gt tdi, don't ya just love 'em? :)

Managed a magnificent 64.8 mpg today on my 15 mile mixed road/motorway commute this morning. Reckon I'd get more if I had further to go too. What fuel duty rise!

On my 4th gt tdi now. I just love these cars. I have a 130 bhp model at the moment.

Anyone else got one?

I should have one in the next month or so as a replacement for the wife's mini.
I'm going for either a late mk5 170GT or a mk6 140GT depending on what deals the brother in-law can swing.

Fine until you approach a corner (mk4)...

Mk5 and 6 much better but appear to instill every driver with the belief that they are piloting the latest 997 Turbo. Definitely the car that I see tailgating the most for some odd reason!

I have a MK5 GT Sport (170TDI) and think they are brilliant cars.

Only average between 38 & 45 mpg, but that's based on a heavy right foot, and short journeys.

Trading it in, in a couple months though.

Not many corners on a motorway which is what they're built for

I've had 6 mk4's altogether. I could have bought a 5/6 but they suffer from the dreaded abs unit failure which cost £1.5k to fix. I've never lost a penny in a mk4 and all have neen ultra reliable except for the odd maf.

Well I loved my mk4 R32 and expected the mk4 150PD TDi to be almost as good - I was appalled at how bad it was when I tested one. Tiny power band, rough engine (even for a diesel it was rough) and the handling was dreadful.

The mk5 was soooooo much better - but the interior was/is worse and they look blander.

Very capable cars, my dad used to own a Mk5 Gttdi as a company car, not my cup of tea personally I prefer the Focus

Don't believe a word the lying VW trip computer tells you. My 3 TDi Passats (130, 140, 140CR) have always claimed 55mpg on long journeys, but in reality they average about 43 MPG. I keep a mileage log and all receipts (for work) and use the car pretty much exclusively on long journeys at steady speeds.

They do appear to attract a certain type, late twenties, early thirties males with a bad attitude, kind of proto Audi drivers, in fact a guy who I used to go to school with turned up on Facebook in relation to another old schoolfriend buying a car type thread, he was a contrary **** at school and still is now judging by his VW TDi Golf total fixation and slavish loyalty, the Focus is crap apparently, I have driven both and prefer the Focus, even allowing for the fact the Mk5 will actually go round corners now. Old Mk4's seem to be piloted now by the boy racer on a budget brigade.

Thats said, good cars, the 130 being the pick of the crop.

The same stereotype I suppose as the classic impreza being driven by council barryboys or new shape owners who have slavish loyalty to Subaru even though evos are better?

I'm 37 with 2 two year old in the back and I'm not on a low budget. Driving in a manner which provides a claim to mid 60's mpg doesn't suggest boy racer type driving.

Bang goes that theory then I do agree however the 130 is the pick of the mk4.

Hi guys, I have a 54 plate gt tdi with pd140 engine. drove it every day 60m round trip and never had a problem. had it played with by power engineering, just shy of 200hp and allot of trq. also helped the mpg a little.. they are heavy beasts and to be honest only fun on the motorway in my op.

non the less.. I loved it so much I gave it too my wife and bought a scoob..

Very true-ive heard other owners mention that the trip computer is wildly inaccurate. As for 64.8mpg-well maybe downhill on a very light throttle!Ive always found it strange when you see adverts for used diesels and they say something like "55mpg", as if it will do that all the time however you drive it rather than only under the controlled conditions that that combined figure was obtained!

Ive seen many very thirsty v8 american pickups advertised where the owners say "oh, it will do about 20mpg around town and 25-30mpg on a run" Yeah, right! I know that a 5.2 ltr Dodge Ram will do well to get 14mpg in town and 18mpg on a run! Even my 2.5 ltr td Ford Ranger will only average 23mpg on a motorway run!

well when I had my passat for sale, I did some very careful driving on a local ish dual carriageway to get the mega MPG that everyone expects from a diesel. i.e so dash display read what the customer anticipated.

knowing full well it'd be more like high 20's in town.

Quick, sell it, you are in the wrong stereotype, go on Autotrader and do a search for Passat SE 130 tdi !

I said that as they do seem to have attracted a certain type round our way, there are probably four early Mk4's around that go everywhere flat out, one has an R32 kit, looks good apart from the single exhaust peeping out.

R32 is pick of the mk4 - it's the only one that handles.

Soul?! Sorry but my corrado vr6 looked after me many a time, one of the best front drivers ever and the engine note hmmm, drive a good vag car then comment, i've got a gt tdi 150, remapped to 200bhp/310lbft. My main priorities were mpg but i really do love the golf, not the last word on handling but its no heavyweight compared to other modern cars out there and the torque out of the 1.9 is suprising
