My ongoing car search is still ongoing but I'm now looking at secondhand Landies (this week anyway
). I've always loved the marque and have had both a Series 3 and a Disco. I prefer the Disco 3 over the Rangie from an aesthetic point of view but can't decide which makes more sense.
I have a budget of up to 25k and am wanting the most amount of toys possible i.e. Harmon Kardon sound, full heated leather etc
What should I be looking out for and which is the best value for money secondhand?
Cheers

A Rangie has a far better interior than the Disco, IMHO. I also personally think the Rangie looks better. "Ford" Rangies are better than "BMW" Rangies i.e. 2006 or later are the ones to have. TDV8 the one you really want.
Both are big heavy fckers. The Disco 3 being near 2.7 Tonnes, so neither is going to be cheap to run.
Are you talking RR or RRS?
The RRS has a bit of a Footballers car about it.
The Disco has a better reputation in the "what people think of you" way.
What's your budget SC?
As if the budget allows, I'd take an Audi Q5 over all of them. Not the Q7 though. It's like a Tank.

the disco is a more practical car but the rr is a far better drive imo
supercharged 4.4 is a joocey bugger and not even that quick
the v8 diesel is a very good drive with plenty of oomph. my mate has both in stock for sale . well he did last week .
the sport is very small inside and has lots of niggles
he also has the power chip which takes ot the flatspots in the tdv6 engines for around 400quid landrover approved

New Disco is MUCH better but clearly very expensive.
If you can get a TDV8 Rangie (non Sport) for that budget, buy it immediately.
Don't even go and see it - just buy it.
EDIT - very high mile ones just about fall into the £25k budget but for a good one, you need £30k

Its not what you want to hear but toy wise and refinement it has to be an X5. I have a 4.6 IS and when I had a look at the discos, the difference was huge, like comparing a mk3 and mk5 golf.

Thanks chaps, lots of good info here
I definitely don't want a RR Sport, it has to be a proper one
but I'm open to suggestions of other marques too. I've already considered everything from a Fiat 500 up to a Range Rover. I have an open mind when it comes to cars but I know what I don't like (see above comment
).
I know Landrover running costs will be high as I've been following a thread over on PH about it, but, I'm used to running a Scoob, how much worse can it be? The Landy will be my daily driver and weekend/holiday/towing/nobbering vehicle so my mileage isn't going to be too high and I'm sure the niceness of the vehicle will outweigh my worries about running costs. Probably
On the plus side a friend of mine is a used car dealer and he'll be sourcing my car for me so I'm looking at trade-ish prices

If you can get a RR TDV8 then do it, the 3.0 isn't great - a RR 4.2 on LPG would be interesting though. £2500 inc for prins LPG IIRC

2006 RANGE ROVER RANGE ROVER 3.6 TDV8 VOGUE SE 4DR AUTO/ FSH/EXT. WARRANTY
Even I would go for the diesel and I am very anti RR diesel..........

If you NEED 7 seats there's only once choice. RR is better value at the moment i.e. a Vogue td6 is the same price as a Disco 3 HSE at the 4 year old mark but the RR was much more new. It's purely supply and demand which is keeping the Disco 3 this high. Ditto above - TDV8 is the one, though TDV6 2.7 can be chipped by a company in Coventry.
TDV6 can be chipped by a bloke called Pete at B.A.S (Bell Auto Services)
You pay him £500odd quid, he couriers you an ecu interface, you plug it into your car and it "registers" to it, and downloads your map... you then connect the interface to your pc and email the map to Pete.... he in turn tweeks it to the required mod you wish (ecconomy, medium or full) then emails it back.. you then just plug it into D3 again and instant TDV6 with no flat spots, with +40bhp and +40lbs torque.
Advantage of interface is when Dealer re-flashes ecu (usualy when carrying out a service), you still have remap to re-load onto ecu at your leisure..otherwise it's another trip to coventry or where ever you got map from... much easier.
Had my D3 done and the difference is fantastic. (see my gallery)

Yes the RR, RRS and Disc are lovely cars, but introduce your self to your local Landrover specialist / service manager as you will be dealing with him endlessly.
Friend of mine had the RR TD6 diesel, brought it new, had endless problems. Gave it back to LR for a loss but brought a TDV8 as he was told all was now fixed / redesigned. Well, one week into ownership, problems began again, electric handbrake, brakes, some ecu, water leaks, etc etc.
My friends Mrs was driving the car and the brakes suddenly came on at 50mph, suspension also went hay wire.
RR / RRS / Disc, all lovely cars, love the looks, but you just can not ignore the reliablity issues. Tesco's did offer a cheaper warranty, identical to the LR 's one, but thats now stopped.
Unless new, with warranty, I would not buy a LR. Infact, sitting here I know 4 other guys that had problems with there RR's.
