Alternatives to Golf GT TDi (150 bhp)
#1
I'd like one of the above but they are:
1) too expensive
2) difficult to get hold of
Can anyone suggest a suitable alternative? Car must be diesel, manual with good build quality and have decent oomph!!

The Ford Focus diesel is supposed to be very good - comes top of the diesel tests at the moment. But personally I would stick to one of the VAG group products.
- as a thought could always have the 130 BHP Golf tuned up !!

Nick,
If search was working it would be dead easy to give you the info......
IIRC = If I recall correctly
the 182 upgrade is a chip upgrade. The post I am thinking about has the www address of the company who offers it in it. I am sure it was within the last month or so.
Let us know how you get on.

I sold my Prodrive Scooby due to the arrival of our first daughter and test drove all the TDI's in the VAG range around the £16000 mark.
The Audi's were to much money, the Passat was to heavy and the Golf boot was to small, I then took the Bora out which was an X demo it's a PD 130 SE, full BOSE system, A\C, alloys the lot and all I can say is I was very impressed. The 6-speed gearbox is great on the motorway and the car handles really well the only option I am going to add is the uprated springs as I find the ride a bit soft after the Scooby. In the end I got a great deal on the car and it's worth more than I paid for it now due to a **** up at the dealers and then selling me the wrong car for £14200 instead of £15600.
All I can say is go out and arrange a test drive in one, add a chip and you have got over 160 BHP and nearly 300 lbs/tq and still 50mpg.
The savings like for like with the Scooby on fuel alone is nearly £600 per month and £700 a year on insurance.
The only other thing I can say is as soon as the wife is back at work full time I am buying another Scooby.
Good Luck, Daz.

The chips locate in the top of the ECU and can be got to with out breaking any seals on the ECU and just plug in and out, when it's time for a service you just swap them. Mine is currently not chipped as I want to put some mileage on the engine before I do it but my mates Golf is.

RON : think thats a remapped chip, and not easily replaced without going to superchips again. Also isnt there an issue over the clutch and gears not taking to kindly to 300+lb/ft torque?

Try this lot, you don’t even have to touch the ECU because it just plugs in under the bonnet.

There was until recently a TDI BBS were some guys in the States were running 350 BHP and 375 lbs/tq on standard gearboxes. You can get induction kits, decated pipes, bigger inter-coolers and bigger injectors ect for really big power.

Wouldn't touch one of these as every car i've seen using one (6) has been left looking like a very poorly maintained diesel van, with big black over fuelled smoke when accelerating hard. Not the most reliable method of chipping the car as it is generic tuning and not particular to the individual car, and as we all know there can be a large variation in standard performances from cars.
