MK4 Golf GTTDI
Thinking about what car to get after i sell my Uk Classic Scooby and think i've decided on modifying a Golf TDI to around 180/200 hp and 300lb Torque.
Anyone had experience in this area? How much would one be looking at to do this? Would 200 require a new turbo and intercooler? Ideally what is the best figure with just a remap?
Also is it best to get a 150 hp jobbie and go from there or just get a cheaper 130 example??
I've had a Fadia VRS which really i only sold to lose the finance payments but i also got a bit bored so i'm after more power this time and IMO the Golf is/can be a much better looker
Thanks in advance..

What is your budget? If your going for something half decent then forget the golf, go BMW 320d or a vauxhall astra CDTI 1.9 (16v) which will cost you all of 495 quid to get it to 200bhp

Erm, the first thing I would do on a golf MK4 TDi would not be engine mods: It would be sorting out that suspension and handling IMO.
Mk5 Golf has a superior chassis out the box (you only need to look underneath it to realise that). Same with the MK2 Seat Leon or MK2 Audi A3 with the same chassis.
Personal preference, but I think the money would be better spent on a model with later chassis.
8 valve PD unit I find fun but peaky. 130ps livable, 150ps gets annoying (unless it has 4motion, which helps).
In comparison the 140ps 16valve PD units I driven on the on later MKV Golf (and Altea) is more refined, less peaky with a wider powerband, but somewhat laggy at low revs. Also its appears to be more thirsty, buts thats kind of irrelevant if its going to be remapped/modded though.

There is a mark 4 around my parts with 200+ bhp, started out as a 150bhp, its got bigger injectors, hybrid turbo, a remap and the fella has fitted an intercooler from a 130bhp as apparently with this setup it gives less lag than the 150bhp one
Car goes well

Think I remember stories of the 130 having a weaker clutch or gearbox or something, and that not lasting well with chipping. I might be wrong, but I'd research it if I were you.
I agree the Mk5 is much better chassis (having a Mk5 GTi now myself), but you ain't going to get one for the £3.5k budget, so that comparison is pointless. Similarly the E90 320d will easily chip to 200+ and ~340lbft, but is well out of that price range.

I've had 3 gt tdis and 5 Imprezas. I go through phases of wanting something fast then wanting something sensible. The pick of the mk4 gt tdis would be the 130. If you start chipping the 130s then the clutch becomes a weak point. If you really want to modify go for a 150, but these tend to have problems with the climate control fans.
The Golf gt tdi is more of a motorway cruiser with its 6 gears and soft suspension. Expect to average over 50 mpg and see close to 60 on a run. I've not bothered to modify any of the Golfs I've had. Much better to buy a 330d bmw if you want something with power for around £5k.
I think I'd have to question why you'd bin an Impreza then get a diesel Golf and start spending money modifying it.
