Hmmm, I might me wrong but it this looking like it will to look dumpy in saloon format; Not as dumpy as the 3 current series, but still a disappointment compared to the outgoing 5 series.
And what gives with huge grilles these days? Audi are bad enough without BMW trying to follow suit.

The E60 in 2003 was a quantum leap forward from the E39, which in itself was an outstanding car - has there really been enough of a gain to warrant a brand new model? Styling wise, it's hardly groundbreaking is it - halfway between a 3 series and a 7 series in almost every way. How about the 5 series having a personality of its own? BMW are nearly at the point of making just one car but in several sizes/shapes, just like Audi. Mercedes seem to be able to give each range a bit of individuality.

I think this will be the next family car - will have to wait for the Touring model.
Currently have a E39 530d Sport - fabulous car. Had an E60 for a while - in many ways a better car, if less characterful.
Might have to be a 520 or 525 this time - although performance is cracking from the new engines!

Very smart IMO, and the stats speak for themselves!
I don't know why BMW don't lay off engine development for a bit tho really. They're way ahead of everyone else, even the other German manufacturers, yet they just keep on upping the power outputs, whilst increasing MPG and slashing C02 at the same time!

Not as dumpy as I initially thought; So that accolade remains firmly with the current 3 series
Although they have cheaped out on teh front bumper moulding by not making it follow the creases in teh bonnet (something Jaguar are experts at cocking up on).
I don't like the fact they keep saying its bigger than the old 5 series, it was plenty big enough IMO. Rather than make it bigger, make the chassis compleletely all out of alloy (not just the subframes), with polycarbonate body panels and make the thing lighter instead. That goes for all other car manufacturers too (Lotus excepted ).
