Default How much discount would you expect from a new car?

If you were going into a volvo dealer to purchase a new S40 at £21K, how much discount would you be happy with? 10%?

In these days where the motor trade is supposed to be deflated, do the dealers *need* to make new sales for dealership bonuses, etc?

I used to work for BMW and the dealers got about 15% discount, but then received additional discounts for meeting targets.

Could I get a 25% discount d'you reckon?

I got peanuts off my new scoob, they were quite happy to throw the extras in for nothing though. Same thing happened to my parents with their Tiguan.

Have a look on Broadspeed or Drive the Deal. That might be a good figure to wave under their noses!

Do you have a trade in to get rid of? Might be worth getting shot of that at webuyanycar.com or similar to put you in a cash buyer position.

25% on a new motor would be out of the question, unless they needed that one sale to meet their targets at the end of the month.

Dealers recieve all sorts of incentives from the Manufacturer for selling X amount of cars each month. Walk in 1 or 2 days before the end of the month, and if they have the car in stock, then a good discount would be on the card, depending of course if the have/haven't met their targets.

5 - 10% is about the norm though.

EDIT.
Ask if they have a pre-registered car. It's their way of meeting targets. Car is brand-new, just registered so they meet their targets.

good responses thanks

I am trying to work out whether if i am spending £15K on a 1 year old <10000 miles car, how much I would have to stretch for a new car. Or, in point of fact, is there a reason to stretch for the new car over the 1 year old one.

The reason for that is simple. They would prefer to give away £2000 of extras over £2000 discount because in reality £2000 extras only costs them about £500-£1000
