Question Something nice and pokey for £4000-5000 (diesel)

Need a diesel hatchback with a £4000-5000 budget in mind.

Something that drives nice with a pokey engine, reliable and economical.

Any ideas?

You can get some decent value Alfa's for that cash. A 4-5 year old example with up to 50k, climate, cruise leather etc either 140/150hp 1.9 or a 2.4 20v 170hp monster. If you can find one [I have one ]

or a saab
Auto Trader UK - SAAB 9-3 1.9TID VECTOR SPORT [150] 4DR ""LEATHER"" 150 BHP

Higher mileage VAG's, older BMW's and lower spec jap clutter is also available with your budget

Need something more "girl sized" than a Saab.

Didn't even think of an Alfa, might take a look.

Done quite a few miles in a 150bhp Astra SRI diesel, very capable and for that money should get a 55 plate or so. Absolute bargain machines in my opinion.

130/228 (maps to 180/310 easily), 40-60mpg, 30-70 6s (mine anyway)

Same engine a Fabia, same potential I think

Old Leon (150)

New Leon (170)

Cooper D

Beetle diesel (girly)

Fiesta TDCI

Swift diesel

Fiat 500 diesel (very girly)
